Canberra United get the points

Just watched my ABC telecast the live game from brisvegas’ suncorp stadium, the girls of canberra united away to one of the new w-league favourites, queensland roar.

A sixteenth minute mix-up between the roar centre back and her ‘keeper gifted canberra the goal they were looking likely to get and it proved the only score of the match – a first win for the team!

They were the better team in the midfield but lacked a little support for their striker, or they may have edged home one or two more.

They looked pretty solid in the back and roar couldn’t match their four goal effort of last week. a well-deserved win and makes the comp pretty unpredictable, with just ten games in the home and away phase.should prove an interesting competition.

Go united!

The site was very quiet over the weekend, maybe they were all out falling off their bikes to avoid cars while pub-crawling or something. Or gardening.

yup, ant, it certainly didn’t lack for the physical – i think the united players won the hard battles all day, even in the heat, and while it showed (with some cramping and like injuries late in the game – we’re gone need to bolster the fitness if we’re going to make an impact), the quality of those final balls into the danger zone lacked potency and support from both sides. this is one aspect that differentiates the men’s and women’s games, i think.

is it just me, or are there tumbleweeds bowling round the riot this weekend..? can’t be everyone away, can it?

I saw some highlights of this on the TV, and was just idly watching the play (waiting for the weather) until it dawned on me that it was women! I think it was a blond ponytail that did it. Women’s soccer has made giant steps in recent years, like women’s hockey. They’re using their bodies more efficiently, moving to the ball and controlling it.

Pretty good to beat QLD. I hope the rules of this comp promote goal scoring, as that’ll make the matches move better and attract viewers. Soccer can get negative real quick if they’re passing back all the time.
