CityNews brings word that deaf patrons of the Canberra Theatre can now get captions on their phones via the Go Theatrical app.

The application will be available for the first time on the March 17 matinee performance of “Summer of the Seventeenth Doll”.

The application can be downloaded to from the App Store for $1.99, with all proceeds going back to The Captioning Studio.

Canberra Theatre Centre has provided live theatre captioning with The Captioning Studio for seven years. This year there will be nine captioned dramas in its 2012 season.

iOS only sadly.

Now if only the movie cinemas would do more captioned sessions too.

i suppose this is a good thing, but I do hate sitting next to people at the theatre who are messing around with their phones.

It is hard to concentrate on the stage when someone is waving a light around in front of you.

Maybe they can all sit together in the little upstairs bits.

If you think it’s hard to concentrate because someone is using a tool so they can hear, sepi, you should try having a hearing disability. Do you complain about people in wheelchairs blocking your way as well? Sorry, but it’s a sore subject with me. While I appreciate what you’re saying about phones – I must admit it gets on my nerves when people text in movies – when you have a hearing impairment (I cannot imagine how hard it is to be completely deaf) you struggle to hear and miss so many things that other people take for granted. You are also treated as if you are stupid and annoying.
