All this talk of kangaroo culls and side discussion of eating kangaroo has got me hungry for some roo. I didn’t want to hijack the original thread about the right and wrong of culling but I do have a question.
When I were a lad and we would go camping, we’d often shoot a roo and [...]
The tension between schools offering a healthy diet and cost-effective food has reached crisis point in the Australian Capital Territory resulting in many school canteens shutting down entirely, according to the ACT Parents & Citizens Associations.
ACT P&C President Vivienne Pearce said the issue had been building for years, but her organisation was now at its [...]
This in from the Noble Palace Chinese Restaurant getting ahead of the curve:
From: Noble Palace Chinese Restaurant
Subject: Noble Palace closed by ACT Health
The owners of the Noble Palace Chinese Restaurant in Woden would like to take this opportunity to advise our customers that as of Thursday 31st of May 2012, we have [...]
The Charnwood maccas removed the bicycle racks, now I know why, to placate the horsey mob

An anonymous emailer has informed CanberraLeaks that prices at the school canteens at some Canberra public-schools have risen to such ridiculous levels, many children can only afford to buy the very basics. Apparently garlic bread is a popular staple.
Minister Andrew Barr this morning addressed the issue via twitter, as did Minister Joy Burch:
@ABarrMLA: @MylesPeterson Canteens [...]
iPho is a new player in Garema Place and while at $11.50 it’s not eligible for the $10 lunch review I thought I’d Give it a go.
Pho (pronounced “fur”) is a staple of Vietnamese cuisine. A rich noodle soup with all the taste fireworks you’d expect from Vietnam.
I first encountered it on a wet night [...]
The Australian International Hotel School at the Hotel Kurragong was purchased by the Blue Mountains Hotel School in 2005. It operates out of the back of the Hotel Kurragong.
Its website, www.aihs.edu.au links to the Blue Mountains Hotel School website, which has no mention of the AIHS. I rang them yesterday and was advised that the [...]
Scandinavians may be georgously tall and pale but they are also Europe’s culinary little secret.
There are a handful of phenomenal Swedish restaurants around Australia but I’m more in the market for little deli items and even alcoholic drinks.
Are there any delis or market stalls around Canberra with Scandinavian treats?
So I want to make cheese with unhomogenised milk.
I just wondered whether anyone can save me some time by recommending the cheapest source of unhomogenised milk.
I’m looking for 10-13 litres per week.
I know the brands here are Barambah, Canberra Gold and Paul’s Organic.
Has anyone managed to strick a good price deal?
I am coming up from the coast, probably early next week, to visit a friend in TCH.
While I’m there I would like to take his wife out for lunch, to give her a bit of time out.
Can someone please recommend a nice cafe/restaurant, relatively near the hospital, which won’t keep us hanging [...]
We happened across the Jazz Apple shop in town today. Not sure whether to call it a cafe, although it has tables and chairs and an espresso machine. It is the outlet where a businesswoman featured the other week on 7.30 sells her cupcakes. The staff are very nice and friendly.
Coffee was moderately OK [...]
I had the pleasure of redeeming my RiotAct gift voucher at Joey’s Kitchen last night and wanted to pass on some praise for the fine meal they provided.
On what was a blissteringly cold evening it was nice to sit in a nice little restaurant and indulge in some fine food and wine.
The meal, [...]
Coffee Club at Kippax and 24 hours Maccas – Kippax gets trendy.
The new Kingston (without the lake).
Found this at the Belco markets.
Couldn’t help but wonder where the eggplant factory was

And so Digress on Akuna Street (formerly the Akuna Club) had a hitout as a live music venue.
With a very strong lineup supporting the launch of the popular singer-songwriter Bryony Aziz a good crowd was always on the cards.
The venue, however, has some bugs to iron out as a music venue. Not least of which [...]
Apart from making your own, does anyone know any cafe/restaurant/caravan that sells them?
The G-Spot no longer exists (the only place I knew that did sell them).
The Capital Region Farmers Market is conducting a survey and it would help us here at RiotACT out if as many of you as possible give it a whirl (and list us in your media consumption):
Is there a particular type of product you’d like to see more of at the Capital Region Farmers Market? How [...]
Golden-Alpine sent in this message of woe in Kaleen.
See the infamous red notices? Take a picture and send them in to email@example.com .
Do you want to get out and enjoy all the adventurous, outdoor activities in Canberra and beyond? with like minded women to share your adventures with?
Then the Canberra Women’s Adventure Group is for you.
The plan is for a monthly activity to be picked by the group, for the group, and include a [...]
Disclosure: Reviewer is a paid RiotAct subscriber, and as luck would have it was therefore eligible for a draw to win a $100 voucher to dine at Joey’s Kitchen. Many thanks to current and former RiotAct staff, Tim and Rachel, for helping me out with re-emailing that voucher, after I failed to print it [...]
One of the consolations of being a single man is, every now and then, buying a beautiful woman a wonderful dinner.
So on Friday I’d rustled up a date and we went to Italian and Sons (aka Restaurant No 7 for reasons not immediately obvious) in Braddon.
My first surprise was calling just after lunch on Friday [...]
Just been for a jaunt to the Curtin shops and noticed that the Bakery has a lovely new addition – a red notice from our friendly food authorities.
[ 28 April, 2012; ] Another fun beer & food matching event at The Durham!
Anyone know which places do a good ANZAC day breakfast, or are at least open?
What breed of chooks should we buy for our backyard?
Planning the weeks meals and came across what looked like a really yummy recipe that uses cotechino.
Thought I’d just mosey up to Fyshwick markets and pick some up at one of the deli’s. The closest I got was a wait of two weeks.
I could use italian sausages instead, however I’d like to give [...]
Tr0jan has sent in the latest prohibition notice sighting, this time slugging Kinglsey’s Weston Creek outlet.
But it seems the purveyors of “awesome chips” are not taking this lying down.
Tweeter Gavin Tapp has posted their retort:
Personally I’d prefer they fix their tiles and operate to a higher standard.
Has anyone yet been to the new Malaysian “Coffeehouse” in Gungahlin close to Yerrabi Pond? The “coffeehouse” is next to a rug/carpet shop which looks like it might be run by the same person. Both shops are adjacent to the (very yummy, and often very busy) Thai Herb restaurant.
The signage on the rug/carpet shop says [...]
Borodinsky bread is said to have been named by a general’s wife who sought to inspire the Russian troops before the battle of Borodino between Napoleon and Kutuzov in 1812 by baking special loaves flavoured with native coriander.
Does anybody know a baker that makes it locally? [otherwise, it is a matter of importing it...]
I’m an expat from the US and we love Canberra!
With autumn upon us, I’m wondering if there are any pick-your-own orchards in the region.
I have such fond memories of plucking apples and pears from orchard trees and would love to have my daughter experience it as well. (You collect the [...]
It’s been a busy two months in the Taratory since our last wrap in February – but that’s because there’s been plenty to do in and around Canberra!
First of all, we’ve quite simply done a lot of eating. On johnboy’s recommendation, T1 checked out what all the fuss was about at Sage, and was totally [...]
There seems to be an excessive amount of restaurants and cafe’s in the capital, the standard from personal experience is quite low in many forms of the dining experience, especially in the quality of food or poorly made coffees, with the exception of a top restaurant starting with “S” that I found to be excellent [...]
