Jon Stanhope was Chief Minister when the on-road cycle paths were marked out on Northbourne Avenue. It constricted traffic and reduced speed limits (which in turn reduces the number of cars that can transit in a given period of time).
So it comes as a bit of a surprise that he’s now noticed this key arterial [...]
Mayor Stanhope is warning that 500 metres of Majura Road near the airport is being widened and resealed.
“Work starts this week on safety improvements and other necessary repairs to Majura Road,”Mr Stanhope said. “The work will take about two months to complete and deliver a safer and smoother road for motorists.
“The roadworks are expected to [...]
Whilst walking my dog on Sunday afternoon around Calwell playing fields, I noticed, (couldn’t miss it really), a burnt out car dumped on the Tharwa Drive side of the fields. It was so badly damaged that it took me a while to work out what kind of car it was. I think it was a [...]
[ED - Crimestoppers' report is now available.]
Yet again there has been another serious accident at the intersection of Florey Drive and Southern cross Drive.
Between this intersection and the next one up (Starke Street) over the last 15 years I have lost count of how many accidents I have seen there.
Enough is enough, when are these [...]
At 9am this morning, my girlfriend had her driving exam, she turned up at Dickson and off she went…
Here is a list of things she did wrong:
– she did 70km/h on northbourne ave – instructor told her to slow down cos she was 10km’s over the limit,
– stalled the car 3 times,
– rolled backwards about [...]
My work colleague who lives out past gundaroo has just told me that the watson caltex was barricaded up yesterday, with people taking away the pumps.
this morning apparently all the pumps are gone, the shops closed up and empty, and the entrances are barricaded up?
anyone know anything about this? considering the shell at epic closed [...]

A few weeks ago Loose Brown suggested that it might make interesting social commentary to video the Sullivan’s Creek bike path and pedestrian crossing of David Street at peak hour.
So on Tuesday 13 March I did just that, for 10 minutes from 8:10am to 8:20am. And indeed it was [...]
Have noticed with roadworks travelling north on Barton Hwy just before Gungahlin Drv overpass that the speed limit has been lowered from 80 to 60 kmph. Does anybody know whether the camera has been recalibrated to the lower speed? Has anybody received any fines for travelling at 70+ kmph?
i-bike.com.au popped up a while ago. Slowly it is getting more members and content, but sits for periods without any action.
I think it’s a great idea for Canberra to have it’s own Cycling forum.
I see there are a number of Cyclists on here and thought I would share.
Can anyone recommend a good car scrapyard in ACT? Wife has an old Daewoo Lanos and i need to get a A/C compressor and a fuel cap ‘door’. Looking for a scrappy where I can go in and browse the wrecks taking off what I want….
Does the RiotACT community have any recommendations for furniture pick-up and delivery services in the Canberra region (including surrounding towns like Queanbeyan, Yass, Bungendore, etc.)
I’m interested in businesses that specialise in the small moves – one or a few items of furniture like a cabinet or a table. Items that could just as easily [...]
Cycling into Fyshwick from Dairy Flat road, there is only one safe off-road option (and Fyshwick is one place where you really want to avoid the roads as a cyclist), and not only is tribulus terrestri growing on the sides of the path, but some bright spark with a mower persistently finishes the job by [...]
Is it just me or are the workers at 121 Marcus Clarke St the cheapest guys around?
The Black Falcon Ute has been parked on the road for about the last month with a note saying “Don’t book me. Here’s what happened last time.” Given he’s there at 8am in the morning and there’s still plenty [...]
The Canberra Times has a good piece of digging by Markus Mannheim on the imminent end to free parking in Barton.
It seems the vast tracts of free parking in The Valley Of Death (has there ever been so many high income workers so poorly served by amenity?) is about to become a huge Fringe Benefits [...]
I will soon be leaving my beloved Canberra and will be going overseas walking the Earth for about a year. Does anyone know of any mobs in Canberra who do long term vehicle storage (plus care of vehicle).
I don’t really want to sell my car and also, I don’t want to just put [...]
CT over the weekend reported that ACT bus crashes had increased over the 2009 year compared to the 2008 year.
Our glorious leader and minister for buses retorted that it was untrue and the apparent increase was due to a new database.
Well I’m blowed, I’ve heard of computers doing strange things, but causing buses to crash??
Having done a roadtrip to Newcastle over Easter I was left wondering as to how wise it really is letting Learner drivers on the Highways and Freeways in such a busy time. I know they need the experience but there were a few dozen of them out there and while they were plodding along at [...]
My son and I were out driving this afternoon and, at about 3:15 pm, came across a police road block in Brindabella Road, about halfway between Cotter Road and Uriarra Road. The police officer said that there had been a fatality, and that the road would be closed for about two more hours.
I have no [...]
Here is my community service notice for those who haven’t learnt where the brakes are in your car. The fixed speed camera on the Tuggeranong Parkway southbound at the Hindmarsh Dr overpass now seems to be pointing the opposite direction to which it was originally installed and has been for the last week or so. [...]
Tonight Media Watch had a go at the Canberra Times for informing the public that Narrabundah car crash victim Scott Oppelaar was himself a thieving shitbag with a life spent bringing misery to the wider community.
According to the Media Watch headline this front page news was “too much truth”.
His grandmother, the Anglican Reverend Ruth Dudley [...]
Just a quick message to say that nothing is cool about speeding around residential areas like Chisholm and Monash, and if you think your tough spinning the wheels in the rain consider that a 10yo kid could spin the wheels on their pushbike.
LAME is what you are and if the crash on Canberra Avenue [...]
It’s with much delight that I announce to Rioters the inaugural Braidwood Billy Cart Derby of which Hoola Hoop is a sponsor.
The event is open to allcomers in a variety of categories and we’d love to see some entries from Canberra and the surrounding region. To encourrage this further, we at Hoola Hoop are looking [...]
Once again we turn to the knowledge (if not wisdom) of the RiotACT hivemind.
Let’s say someone has a car which will cost more to repair than what it’s worth.
Who can take such a car off one’s hands? Scrappers? Junkyards? Used car salesman?
Recommendations and advice welcomed!
Some days things don’t work out quite the way you planned. Yesterday’s World Naked Bike Ride was a bit like that for me.
As other media appear to be trying to pretend that a hundred naked didn’t actually ride around Lake Burley Griffin yesterday I’ll try and explain the whole experience.
Snowball Alice has written at length [...]

[Ed - theres more to this story than most have heard, we're sure more will come out in the following days. The RiotACT has heard some rumors about the driver and where he was before the chase, who the occupants of the second car were and what [...]
I am looking for a decent driving school, having moved to Canberra not long ago, I have sent my daughter to 3 so far. So far they have been shocking! One was so bad she came home crying because he made her feel so uncomfortable….
Can anyone suggest a reputable and honest driving school for [...]
I have recently relocated to the ACT and currently living on the North-side and I was hoping that Canberrans can advise me on a very strange motoring phenomenon that seems exclusive to the ACT.
Having driven around and commuted in many of the world’s largest cities, most of which are no where near as planned and as [...]
Just got myself a new Toyota Camry Hybrid in Sydney and finding that I’m doing 1,072km on one tank of fuel – honest truth! Amazing.
Need to know if anyone has a strong recommendation about any of the (few) Toyota dealerships in Canberra for their service ability.
That is, I want service with a smile [...]
Sad news about a crash on Kuringa Drive just after 4am this morning.
Seems that the driver strayed onto the north-bound lane and slammed into another vehicle. (2 cars on the road at 4am? Unlucky)
From what I’ve heard, the crash was up near the Barton Highway turnoff.
It brings the road toll for the year to [...]

The Canberra Airport flight paths are published at http://www.canberraairport.com.au/PDF/currentflightpaths.pdf. If this publication is accurate then why is it that I often hear the loud roar of aircraft at my house in Calwell? Has anyone else noticed this? The reality of flight paths in the Calwell area is far from the fantasy as published on the above [...]
Dear Canberra Residents
Canberra roads are chocker block full of noisy vehicles. If you agree and like me want to do something about this then it would be great if you could comment on this issue here. If I perceive that there is sufficient interest then I will set up a group of interested people with [...]
