a BOARD COMMUNIQUE has reached us from Basketball ACT:
The board of Basketball ACT wishes to advise the resignation of Tony Jackson as the Chief Executive Officer.
Best of luck to him.
If you grew up in Canberra in the 1980s then the coolest man in the whole world was the Canberra Cannon’s Herb McEachin.

The Canberra Capitals have decided that strong on court leadership is not for them in naming two players as co-captains for the upcoming season:

The four biggest teams in ACT women’s sport are all going to the pub, apparently to promote “Canberra’s Summer of Women’s Sport” but also possibly because they would like a beer.
Four Teams, the Canberra Capitals (basketball), Canberra United (football), ACT Meteors (cricket) and Canberra Heat (volleyball), are about to start their new campaigns for their [...]
I’ve long been of the opinion that the “Lauren Jackson Show” is not in the best interests of the Capitals.
It’s nothing against her, she seems like a great player and person, it’s just the corrosive effect of a prima donna in any team environment, especially in such a small pond as the Canberra Capitals when [...]

The Canberra Times has a depressing story of confusion at the Capitals as Lauren Jackson plays a will she or won’t she game over the 2013 season.
Given a choice between investing in young talent or ageing big names a smart team bets on youth every time.
But in the minds of those who fund the Capitals [...]

The Canberra Times reports that, as the Capitals lurch towards their worst ever losing streak, star player Lauren Jackson is not expected to play this season.
So glad ActewAGL are slugging our utilities to pay for a non-playing star player.
How’s the bus doing?
@canberracaps that is a terrible photo!
— Lauren Jackson (@laurenej15) December 19, 2012
For reasons passing immediate understanding the Capitals have tweeted Andrew Barr and Lauren Jackson at today’s big photoshoot of Canberra sporting teams.
How nice they’re having a lovely time even if Ms Jackson is less than thrilled.
Remaining obsessed with the player who can’t play, the Capitals have the thrilling news that Wodonga’s own Lauren Jackson might be immortalised (if you vote for her sufficient numbers) in wax for Madame Tussauds effort to fleece the colonials more efficiently:
Jayco Australian Opals and Canberra Capitals star Lauren Jackson is one of six Australian sporting [...]

NineMSN are having a poke at the Capitals’ crumbling season having built the team around the injured Lauren Jackson.

The seven-time WNBL champions appeared to be in denial after suffering their fourth loss in five games in [...]
For those wondering how much of a used taxi Lauren Jackson’s high profile signing (under written by the prices of our water and power) might be there’s good news from the Capitals:
Lauren Jackson is now settled back home in Canberra and has undergone a thorough assessment by the Canberra Capitals medical staff.
The comprehensive screening, headed [...]

In an effort to encourage more people to take public transport in the ACT, Lauren Jackson will soon span [...]
The SMH has word on the Tradies getting a very cheap naming sponsorship of the Canberra Capitals at $150,000 a year.
TransACT are staying on as a minor sponsor and Ivan Slavich was reportedly at the announcement wearing his Chief Executive hat.
Andrew Barr is letting us know he’s found an extra $250,000 per year for a “performance agreement” with the Canberra Capitals.
This of course is on top of what we pay the Capitals through Transact and ActewAGL.
The Agreement, worth $250,000 per annum for three years, will build on the existing annual support provided to the Capitals. [...]
Thanks to @chriswalski for the tip about an NBA.com story on Canberra’s Patrick Mills who’s doing rather well playing basketball for the San Antonio Spurs.
The article doesn’t paint a pretty picture of Australia’s past, which is unfortunate considering the considerable government assistance that got him where he is today.
Being crap has been the new black for Canberra’s mens sporting teams this year.
Now we’re hearing the familiar sqwawk of the loser from the Capitals Marianna Tolo:
”We’ve got a tough weekend, and we’ve got to do everything we can to get those two wins,” Tolo said.
”It’s still not over for us. Looking at the teams [...]
As I write the great and the good are still in the foyer of the ActewAGL building telling each other how great it is that basketballer Lauren Jackson has been lured back to Canberra for the 2012/13, 14/15, and 15/16 seasons. (thus skipping 2013/14)
With ActewAGL CEO Michael Costello saying he was “only too pleased to [...]
The ABC has the upsetting news that the Bulleen Boomers have obliterated the Canberra Capitals 103-78 in Melbourne to take the 2011 WNBL crown.
Nothing hurt Canberra more than its dismal field-goal percentage; the defending champs shot a combined 29-of-77 from the floor (38 per cent) and hit just one of 16 shots from downtown.
