Chief Minister Stanhope is getting behind the new Saturday markets launching this weekend on City Walk.

There are some interesting conditions being set:

As a result of feedback received, trading conditions of the City Walk Expo will not permit market stall holders to sell flowers, ready-to-consume food, coffee and wine. Stalls selling second-hand goods, antiques and collectables will be limited to no more than 10 per cent of the market space.

If the local shopkeepers have set these conditions they are eejits. Attracting customers would benefit them too. Having clusters of similar wares is actually beneficial, but people have a hard time accepting that, and panic about competition.

You don’t see Dickson complaining about another Asian restaurant, because the more there are the more the area is known for Asian food, and the more people specifically go there.

I hope these markets do ok, but it is seeming a bit grim already.

The punters will be busting to get there with those conditions.

Another sanitised/boring attraction courtesy of the ACT Government.

Are fruits and veges considered as ready to consume foods?

Is that feedback from nearby retailers perchance?
