We hear Canberra United have won their W-League Grand Final 3-2 after having taken an early commanding lead.

In a grim year for Canberra’s sporting teams at least we can pin our hopes, dream, and vicarious send of success on women’s soccer.

I failed to get to a game all season, sadly, but watched much of their TV games. Great team, great attitude need more promotion and platitudes.

Ok…I admit that I did not go to any games…but I had been hearing things, culminating obviously in the finals stuff. I will definitely make an effort to go next time – I’m sure Master Cholet will love running around at the footy.

Can I ask out of the first five commenters (Waiting For Godot; Battlecat; madamcholet; Panzer; Thumper), how many Canb Utd games did you attend this year? If you’re like me, you followed their results online, but never attended.

Battlecat and Mrs Battlecat were there for all but one home match, same thing last year. But it’s better to follow online than not at all. The support was great yesterday.

What a bunch of champions. We enjoyed a family day in the heat and whilst I’ll admit it was our first time we will definitely go along regularly next season. The crowd were fun and supportive, especially so og the “green streaker” when he jumped back over the fence and his green mates hid hie from security!
One last thing mention, we saw them at The Tradies about 8.30 and they were all there with their hangers on and having a good time, especially the bloke in the yellow shorts. No drunken yobs, no fights, just a really well behaved bunch. Perhaps they could teach the other codes a thing or 2 about how to win people over. Oh, and how to win too!

It was a great game and good atmosphere, despite the heat!

Heard an interview on 666 with the captain of the team, (a very intelligent and well spoken young lady), and the coach, and it is very apparent that the womens team has next to no money, and no permamnet training ground, so this is fantastic. Just shows what absolute dedication and talent can do.

Was just talking to Mr Cholet this week about the rough time that females have in sport, whether its having to hold down day jobs, or just not have equity in the amount of prize money….maybe this is the start of more interest and money flowing their way.

Let’s have a ticker tape parade.

Unfortunately, until the media, and in particular television, takes women’s sport more seriously, the money will be flowing not very far. While the number of people that attended was admirable, it won’t get that level of attention until people start attending in bigger numbers.

That said, congratulations to the team for a great effort throughout the season. I’d love to wish them the best for 2012/13, but I am a Reds fan 🙂

So true, when I heard that the player of the match got a $250 shopping voucher from Westfield, I couldn’t believe it…. that really says it all.

Anyway, a well deserved win and congratulations to the women! It was an outstanding season!!

Great match, great season, undefeated. What a champion team.

A small ray of light after the big guns – the Raiders, Brumbies and Capitals – all flopped badly.

Maybe this marks the turning point and local sport will stage a soccer-led recovery.
