ACT Fire & Rescue on scene at Jervois Street, Deakin following a fire in a household oven.

Occupants were cleaning the oven with the pyrolytic cleaning feature when the oven glass door shattered and two tea towels on the oven door rack caught fire.

Minimal damage to the kitchen but oven has been destroyed.

The house was filled with some minor smoke logging which activated the smoke alarm.

Time of Emergency Triple Zero (000) call 1.00pm.

Three fire pumpers and the specialist Hazardous Materials unit attended.

Crews will shortly depart the scene.

So what’s this about cleaning ovens?

Probably one of those fancy overpriced European brands that have a tiny oven (ideal for hampsters and quail but useless for a leg of lamb). Buy Australian. St George still make a decent size oven available in white and who needs all these fancy self-cleaning features anyhow?

A pyroclastic oven, now I’ve heard everything. And they commit suicide.

I’ll stick with my old Whirlpool, it’s basic but big enough for several roast lambs and all you need to clean it is a can of exceptionally smelly stuff and plenty of elbow grease.

I notice some mob is now advertising that they’ll clean your oven “to showroom condition”.

That’s taking planned obselescence to a whole new level.

We had a Fisher and Pykell oven that the door exploded on, compay was not interested and would not return emails.

Name and shame the manufacturer so I don’t end up with one in the June sales!

As in…. the oven was being used under normal operation and it decided to become a hazard.
(pyrolytic cleaning feature being that new feature where the oven turns extremely hot such that any grime inside will turn into smoulder, thus making cleaning as easy as a simple wipe down).

How fascinating *wry smile*. Wonder if we’ll ever get to know the manufacturer of the oven?

Come to think of it, had a brand new deep fryer that just wouldn’t adjust itself to the temperature set. In fact it just kept on getting hotter and hotter and hotter. Had to return the damn thing (Breville, in case readers are interested).
