Does anyone know of any good Christmas Lunch venues in Canberra?

This year, with a trail of various family illnesses, frail aging perents etc etc we’re looking at a change in the usual process of a big family gathering at parents place where we bring different courses etc, to possibly eating out at a venue instead.

Not interested in the $175 per head level from one of the large hotel chains, but are there cheaper, family friendly, alternatives out there?

Cheers

you might find this link useful for x mas lunch.

The restaurant in Black Mountain Tower has menus for $70 odd per head. They may have a decent Xmas menu. Boffins at ANU could be worth a try as well. Otherwise the usual suspects (Labor, Southern Cross, Helenic clubs) will have something going on.

I remember back in the day when I worked at Sizzler, and they’d open for Christmas Day lunch, and the place was packed! One of the saddest sites I ever saw.

“Quick kids, get another serve of pig fat ice cream and salad that’s been dropped on the floor out the back…it’s CHRISTMAS TIME”!

On cue my inbox presents me with the Anise Christmas Day Lunch Menu, but at $165 per head I’ll keep it to myself. 🙂

We went to Rydges a few years ago (there are two options, one pricey and one not-so-pricey and more kid-friendly) and had a great time … kid’s buffet, balloon man, jumping castle, santa, pressies, lovely food, unlimited wine/beer etc… I wouldn’t want to do it every year, but it was wonderful not having to clean up!

ditto – we always have a duck pancake course and are blessed to have real duck opened for fresh purchase on the day. there really is a santa!

(and am having duck laksa from there tonight – better half acquiring while i play fusbol, home to great tucker and great other half apre game – bliss!)

Don’t tell them that, astrojax, everyone will want some.

My family has an Xmas tradition of buying KILOS of BBQ duck and pork from Tak Kee and rounding it out with seafood and salads. Best Xmas tucker of all!

tak kee, chinese roast duck restaurant in dickson, is open on xmas day. about twelve bucks for a laksa sounds a great deal to me!

It’s crazy how little online information there is by restaurants this close to Christmas. I was looking for New Years Eve deals – nothing.

At least your work put’s on a Christmas do. We get zilch man!

I believe the soup kitchen in Civic does a cheap Xmas lunch.

cheers all – some good options there – most of which didn’t show on my web trawl this morning and as I’m not a frequenter of the clubs, not familiar with their offerings!!

Most of the major clubs are offering a Christmas day lunch.

Ainslie FC/ Gungahlin Lakes http://www.ainsliefc.com/specialevents/ are doing one for $59 per adult or $25 per child (under 12)

And the Labour club is doing something similar.

I posted the same question same time last year!! We ended up at Hill Station Restaurant: $115 per head excluding wine. From memory there was a seafood entree, turkey/ham plus roast vegs for main, and I presume pudding for pudding. It was all well executed without being startling, but the service was great, and we had a private room with access to the verandah and the gardens – would work well with kids.

Other venues that I came up with last year were: Benchmark Wine Bar, First Floor, and Anise. Good luck!

According to some nutters on another RA thread, I hear Macca’s is pretty good!

Sorry for the lack of use response. Seriously I’d try somewhere like Delissio depending on the numbers, and if not there maybe Mecca Bar in Kingston?

Southern Cross Woden, Yacht and Tugg are open. They have expensive and cheap options. http://www.cscc.com.au

Woden Tradies has always had a good, cheap Xmas seafood lunch but this year they won’t be having oysters like they have had in previous years. Still, they have prawns, mussels, hot food and desserts. Definitely the best value in town.

quote “]How much cheaper? and “Christmas Day..penalty rates etc, I wouldn’t expect much cheaper…good luck”

I accept the xmas day rates comment – no prob – guess I’m scouting the field before we bite the bullet and press gang the brothers to chip in at someone’s place – been doing some more web searching and found the Labor Club at $58.50/head plus drinks – so HC, guess I’m looking at about the 60-100 per head mark. Whether it’s cash and a commercial venue or time in preparation and cleanup at home – there’s a tradeoff with cost and time! 🙂

Anyone else found any venues?

thanks

I think the Crowne christmas seafood buffet is $70 per head … but probably booked out by now
