Eat meat to get massive says ANU

The Australian National University is touting research by Dr Stefan Broer, head of the molecular nutrition group in the ANU College of Medicine, Biology and Environment, showing that mice getting lots of protein end up being bigger mice.

“So we focused on mice that could not transport amino acids from the intestine into the cells of the body and therefore could not properly process proteins.

“One of the first things we noticed was that the animals were quite a bit smaller in size than normal mice, which suggests that eating more protein can increase our body size and possibly our sporting potential in the long term.

I reckon this explains why the Qarmatians never made the big time.

RBW, at the risk of being labelled crass, your farts could quite possibly be used as a weapon of mass destruction. Dear Lord, no wonder you run fast.

why do you think I fart? I actually fart very little. When you eat a lot of fiber things go through you in less < 24 hours as nature designed. Not enough time for carbohydrates to ferment and proteins to putrefy. A lot of meat eaters don't like to eat fruit and I don't blame them. Meat takes a long time to digest and with no fiber does not go through that fast. Fruit digests almost immediately. if it gets stuck behind a mass of meat of course the fruit is going to ferment and cause gas.

Right. That would explain why Japan has such a high life expectancy. Your rambling post typifies the combination of narcissism and nutterism that typifies people who embrace weird dietary fads.

I think you misunderstood, which is ok, because I was not overly clear enough. When I said “bulk of carbohydrate source” this is largely only damaging due to lack of variety and also if rice is heavily processed and GM (as is current in western countries a lot). Non-GMO brown rice is one of the cleanest grain foods on the planet. Hence why asians have longevity on a basic diet. Asian countries have deteriorated in some respects due to overuse of salt (soy sauce) and introduction of many western diet. There are some issues with overeating grains — mainly due to the ‘stickiness’ factor in the gut which does prevent absorption of other key nutrients. A diet rich in fiber will ensure things are pushed through. Eating grains and not a lot of fiber will cause problems. The long-lived asians you speak of ate mainly organic food, high in rice, high in leafy green vegetables, high in fruit (tropics has lots) low in meat, low in dairy. Very and extremely close to the diet I am advocating. I simply don’t eat as much rich and cook less of my vegetables and I supplement more protein (although i did say a key protein source of my was the brown rice protein powder). I’m not all that different.

Anyway I would prefer to argue facts and concepts and not put people down like you did to me. I sincerely hope you consider being nicer to people.

Look, I churned laboriously throught that that long, long post by rbw and was gonna quite it in its entirety in order to make a comment, but decided that the essence of it, and all required comment was contained in four simple words.

“I sprout my nuts”.

Enough said.

The Frots – while I have met some perfectly healthy vegetarians, the defining characteristic of people with religious intensity about what they eat is that they are (according to them) always feeling unwell.

Your right – that seems to be a trait that I noticed as well. Whinging, moaning, shrilling little things they are. rbw is probably the exception!

Protein I get a wide variety and cover all essential aminos. Main sources are sprouted buckwheat (full spectrum protein), chlorella, spirulina, sprouted brown rice protein powder and a lot of greens.
I focus heavily on mineralisation of the body, ensuring all nutrients are covered. Key foods I eat to ensure I get critical minerals including a lot of kelp, lots of dark leafy green vegetables, lots of vegetable juices and meals. I sprout my nuts to deactivate the enzyme inhibitors I eat brazil, macadamia, almonds. Seeds I eat pumpkin seeds and sunflower.
Variety, variety, organic, fresh and seasonal produce is a must to ensure you cover all bases with minerals over the course of the year. Rely on staple meals of the same foods day in day out, can ensure you miss critical nutrients. I rarely eat the same meal in regular occurence.
Fruit is my main carbohydrate source. I don’t eat grains. I eat legumes but only sprouted legumes that aren’t cooked.

Sure, you may be healthier, but I reckon I’d be ready to kill myself after a diet like that for anything more than a week. And your friends must love having you around for dinner.

If you don’t enjoy a nice hunk of dead cow lathered in hot, salty blood you really shouldn’t be considered a man. I don’t have a problem with female vegetarians though.

I could have told them that. I eat cheeseburgers and chicken nuggets from McDonald’s all the time and I’m huge.

I find that a little surprising, rice is the staple carbohydrate source for a lot of Asian countries that I understand have pretty healthy, long lived populations (e.g. Japan).

What you had to say about veganism was interesting though, I think you’re right in saying that a nutritious, healthy diet doesn’t require meat.

Though I’d add that I don’t think diets that do include meat are necessarily unhealthy.

So if you eat meat, which is made from animal muscles, you will get nutrients that suit growing your own muscles.

Who would have thought…?

Protein makes you grow big? Really?

Have any of you ever stepped foot inside suppliments store?

Protein protein protein. Best way to gain max weight is 4 litres of full cream a day and a nice big steak. Combine that with 3 sessions of big lifting a week and you’ll be strong in no time.

I regime of hitting the “juice” works wonders.

So researchers at the ANU – the University of East Bumcrack – have only just found out that protein builds muscle and makes you bigger – something that bodybuilders and anybody who knows anything about nutrition have known for years. Did they get a research grant to come up with this superfluous nonsense? It just goes to show that academics are way out of touch with the rest of society, cossetted and mollycoddled in their little bubble feeding off the public teat of research grants and inflated salaries paid for by the long-suffering taxpayer.

You spend alot of time thinking about it and not much time eating IMO

Vegetarians and vegans are trendy mental defectives who are skinny, gaunt, unhealthy and wimpish. Meat is vital for proper development of the brain – vegetarians and vegans have much lower IQs and intelligence levels than normal people. Vegetarian and vegan parents are far more likely to produce children with autism, cerebral palsy, spina bifida and cystic fibrosis. Hitler was a vegetarian.

I’m a vegan and I also happen to be one of the best mountain runners in the ACT. getting off meat and dairy was the best thing I ever did for health and performance. I also happen to be a mostly raw vegan eating almost entirely fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. Most Vegans I have met I haven’t particularly liked either – a high majority have toxic personalities. But I have also found that with meat eaters — so its more a conscious thing than a dietary thing if you look at it from a spiritual point of view.

You can also have two vegans that eat completely different foods. You can be a vegan and eat nothing but grains and fried food. It doesn’t make you healthy, nor would it do wonders for your personality. I’ve known vegans who barely eat vegetables. Grains are particularly damaging for health if they are used as a bulk of your carbohydrate source. Soy is also very damaging to the thyroid and energy function. This is why vegans and some vegetarians have that gaunt look because they aren’t mineralised and deficient in key nutrients due to still the focused on processed and overcooked foods – and also lack of variety. Their thyroids are also depleted and they lack power energy (i.e. energy needed for sprinting).

So how is my ‘vegan’ diet different. Not saying my diet is best, or even possible for many people. It is however best for me and being a mountain runner I am extremely aware of what affects performance and does and doesn’t work. Spiritually its also a necessity for me, but thats a private thing so I won’t talk about it.

Fruit is my main carbohydrate source. I don’t eat grains. I eat legumes but only sprouted legumes that aren’t cooked.
I really only supplement with Soy Lecithin and Magnesium and some B vitamins including B12. Lecithin is predominant in eggs (and butter) and is hard to get in plant foods …although is abundant in sunflower seeds also. This is a critical nutrient for the nervous system and brain function. it is critical from my experience. magnesium helps my running. B12 is hard to get unless you eat fortified foods (both vegans and meat eaters are deficient throughout our society).
The only salt I consume is celtic sea salt and is critical

Carb to Fat to Protein ration ideally aim for range 70 – 10 – 20. Some raw vegans will tell you 80-10-10 is optimal but I think more protein is needed in my experience (due to my high activity). Some raw vegans tell you salt is poison, they are idiots. There are idiots and fools in every dietary paradigm. So I don’t even label myself as anything. I just eat fresh organic and raw foods wherever possible. The only thing I won’t do is eat meat again, but thats more a spiritual than a health requirement for me.

I don’t see many vegans/vegetarians doing what I am doing with more awareness on nutrient profile + mineralisation and calories not from bread/soy. I also don’t expect really anyone to do it to the level I do. All my blood test and hair mineral anaylsis comes up great and I feel great – better than ever. I run like I was a kid again (I am 32 now bTW).

Anyone that tells you you have to eat meat to be healthy and have energy is wrong. But you have to be smart about it. The cows are only eating plant foods, where are they getting their protein from? Simply put plants have a lot of aminos – especially grass. You just have to eat a lot of it and also assimilate and absorb it. A lot of cooked meat is not assimilatible by the body, and most of it rots in the intenstines and colon. What we do assimilate is enough of the amino acids left behind that aren’t destroyed by cooking (approx 50%) that allow people to get big enough on meat foods and think its a necessity. There is nothing different between the aminos in meat and the aminos in plant foods. An amino acid is a atomic structure that can only be one form. This is where most people lose the plot on that debate. Plant aminos are not inferior to meat aminos. You just have to work harder and eat more plants to get the same amount. By not cooking the plant foods you destroy less aminos, but not cooking makes some plant foods harder to breakdown. That is why you need to build stomach acid strength, focus on juicing and food processing raw vegetables to open up the cells to allow for amino uptake. It is very very possible. I also supplement with plant protein powders and spirulina/chlorella too to cover any defiency. Most people don’t know that spirulina/chlorella are 60% protein the HIGHEST protein foods on the planet. But we also don’t need that much protein.

As for minerals, the cows do the hardwork for the meat eaters as grass is one of the most mineral rich plants on the planet. This is converted into the meat that people consume. Vegans are at more danger but can get the same minerals by a diverse plant diet with a focus on high volume. This is hard with vegetables – kelp is too the rescue the most mineral rich food you will find in the health store. The added benefit is iodine that strengthens the thryoid a key problem with vegans and also a lot of meat eaters too.

So for those vegans eating grains/soy and mostly cooked food. Not getting enough protein, not getting anywhere near enough minerals, phytonutrients, antioxidants. But that goes for meat eaters too on those. That is why we have a chronic epidemic of cancer and heart disease in this society. The meat eaters, vegetarians and vegans – none of them are doing it anywhere near enough right. There are good aspects and bad aspects to the diets. I think the high grain/soy vegan diet is more catastrophic to health than meat because with meat at least you get more minerals and protein. But there is MAJOR consequences to eating meat especially in the digestive tract and also the high amounts of chemicals (do some research) and adrenalin contained in slaughtered animal tissue.

Just my thoughts on the issue.

At the risk of offending the entire world, it says a lot.

Most of the vegetarians that I have sadly known tend to be rather ‘weak’ looking people – and weak in character as well. They tend to be limp-wristed, pale office psychopaths. To the extent that I was actually speaking about this with a collegue last week – we were comparing notes on one such ‘vegan’ who had a prior history of simply being the most miserable, sour-faced cretin on the planet. Interesting.

And before I get flogged, yes, I know it doesn’t apply to each vegan.

Just the ones I have met!

+1

If I had to eat tofu and fungus instead of a rare eye fillet, I’d be miserable too.

I know a few pretend vegetarians (I’m a vegetarian, but I’ll have the chicken thanks…) and have worked with one militant vegan and they do tend to be of the weedy variety. But I put that down to the lack of double whoppers with extra bacon in their diet.

Not knowing any female vegans……………………………………consider my butt kicked! And you are correct, it is male vegans that seem to be the greatest pricks. Perhaps they need a steak or two.

This is hardly a surprise. Meat is naturally high in protein and amino acids – required for building and repairing muscle.

JB – poor analysis. Protein doesn’t necessarily equal meat. I know vegetarians who are professional sports people – footballers, boxers, marathon runners. Its about understanding proper nutrition and making educated (and ethical) decisions about what you put in your mouth.

At the risk of offending the entire world, it says a lot.
