pokies

Local street art legend ELK has been given a free kick by the makers of poker machines Aristocrat entertainment.

And he’s duly dispatched them through the posts.

Hope he didn’t need the $9,500.

Gentleman I’m just going to call this particular spat quits.

ELK is by any definition a legitimate artist and is not required to justify his entire life history.

Agreed – and you only have to look outside IGA Lyneham and see the work that has gone into livening up a massive wall, to see the value of street art.

That was done at the Party at the Shops. So Masquara is praising a Centenary event! Who’d have thunk it?

As to ELK, I like the way he makes me see very familiar buildings differently each time he creates new images. Makes you wake up!

I have no quibble with good Centenary events, Poetix.

So basically the story is this:

“Local vandal is concerned about the community…when it suits him”

Vandal? I’ve got a piece in the National Portrait Gallery, dickhead.

So? That doesn’t mean that you haven’t vandalised or defaced public property.

Isn’t this your work? Did you get permission to deface this sign? I’m sure there are countless other examples.

Thats actually one of my stickers, that I give away for free on my facebook page, to people that like me, at my own expense. I didn’t put that sticker on that sign, but feel free to take it off if your offended by this horrible display of vandalism.

Fine, I am quite willing to retract if you can honestly say that you have never done any of your art on public or private property without the consent of the owner. If you have…ever…no matter how good it is…it is still vandalism.

I have enough respect and commonsense not to paint on private property without permission, public property on the otherhand is merely a canvas to share my artwork with the wider public, which the majority of appreciate and encourage (except for a few trolls that are still living in the dark ages)

Was Luke the person who decided to share this email with the world? Or was it Janice?

So, someone who spends their time (occasionally?) defacing public property with their idea of ‘street art’ goes and tells a representative of a large company that legally provides licenced gaming machines to pubs and clubs (which in turn donate a large amount of their gaming money to a number of worthwhile charities) that they should be ashamed of themselves, and to also take a good hard look at themselves in the mirror?

Mmm, interesting………..

hah. yep. The Pokies companies are the moral entity in this debate.

RadioVK said :

ELK, While I agree with your sentiments on poker machines entirely, there was no need to attack the sender of the email personally. All you have done is to make yourself look a little childish.

Saying “no, I’m not interested, and for these reasons” would have been far more grown up.

The best advice I can give you is go home tonight and take a very good look in the mirror…

In my defence, that was not an attack. It may have been highly patronising, but not rude.

Defacing public property? do your homework, dickhead.

Is there any chance of a non-squinty version of this pic?

You could try reading the instructions in the OP.

Well I couldn’t zoom it either …

Perhaps a non-squinty version requires you to be a member of Picasa?

Good on you ELK – I’m with you.

And what a pompous job title for someone who designs pokies.

Makes no difference. I can’t zoom the image either, whether logged into Picasa or not.

Let’s see if this post is published, after my previous one where I told JB his reply to RiotFrog was rude mysteriously never saw the light of day.

Gambling certainly seems to be out of favour at the moment and that is a fantastic thing IMO.

Not with me, it isn’t. But it does seem to be suffering some sort of politically-correct backlash. Slots, in particular.

Society has managed to focus on the low-single-digit percentage of punters – intelligent, sentient humans – who develop “gambling problems”, and somehow conclude that the machines are culpable. Were they not available, these people would simply feed their problem elsewhere.

For the other (let’s say) 97% of punters, it’s just shits and giggles. And a small mountain of voluntary taxation.

Apologies if this rant is way off-context, but I could scarcely read the OP either.

Further to my last comment, I’m wondering how many people that think this is great, visit pubs, buy alcoholic drinks or heaven forbid, smoke cigarettes?

Would they be cheering on someone who said similar things to their local bartender or grog shop attendant? How about a worker at a supermarket selling cigarettes?

I agree with RadioVK’s comment.

Great work, ELK. If RA had a positive version of the Mully Cup I’d nominate you.

I’m having problems as well. Have followed the link, but the zoom button is greyed out. Is it just me?

Legend!

I am proud to be able to say I know you E.L.K. Very well done indeed!

Well done.

What a dribble.

How hard us it to simply say no thanks, I don’t want to support the gambling industry?

Way to stick it to the man (or mid level pleb doing their completely legal job).

That was great!

Gambling certainly seems to be out of favour at the moment and that is a fantastic thing IMO.

Thanks S4anta. Although $9500 would come in real handy right now, integrity comes first. Coming from someone who has personally seen lives ruined and families torn apart by poker machines, this email was never going to be recieved well.
