Because sometimes bad things happen there needs to be good people who will help. If you have the time and ability, this may be one of the most important things you could do.

Volunteering ACT is launching the Emergency Volunteering Program at the Old Bus Depot Markets, Kingston, on Sunday 20 October at 10.30am.

The program is designed to make it much easier for organisations to find people with certain skills and abilities in order to help assist with local disaster recovery efforts, such as the 2003 firestorm. Volunteering ACT is the one point of contact for the Australian Capital Territory in the case of an emergency for people who want to volunteer and organisations seeking volunteers.

To mark the launch, Volunteering ACT will be calling on the community to help piece a giant puzzle of Canberra back together again – just as emergency volunteers would be helping to put the pieces of the Canberra back together after a disaster.

The program will be launched by Simon Corbell MLA and will have several other high profile members of the community in attendance. People can register as an emergency volunteer at www.emergencyvolunteering.com.au or by downloading the Ready ACT smartphone application, and help piece Canberra back together again.
