The ABCbrings word of an evacuation in Snowtown.

Canberra Airport managing director Stephen Byron says an excavator working on the demolition of the old Qantas terminal hit a main gas line about 7:40am.

“As a result it was necessary to evacuate the terminal.

“The gas line was turned off at the valve very promptly and the ACT fire brigade has cleared the area as safe.

“But the Hazmat crew from the fire brigade also want to go into the terminal to do some monitoring to make sure there are no levels of gas that would be unsafe, as a precaution.”

Mr Byron says the terminal should reopen around 9:00am.

The roads into the airport were still blocked by cops when I went past, about 9.15am. But they evidently didn’t know about the secret road the taxis use, as they were still going in and driving around the terminal! Lot of cars trying to get into the airport and Brindabella Park.

actually I can see the road near the servo is now clear, so it’s definitely open.

Its reopened now JB (about 0850hrs).
