Event entertainment ideas

I am chasing some suggestions from fellow Canberrans on good local entertainment I might be able to employ for an evening later this month.

The event is a post-conference drinks/mingler/bbq for postgraduates and it would be good to do something a little different to entice maximum turn out.

I was thinking along the lines of jugglers, drummers, firebreathers, jumping castle with the ultimate fall back position being a DJ.

So does anyone have any good ideas for local entertainers who’d be up for an hour or two of work?

Suggestions of strippers and/or Cold Chisel covers bands will be met with tired groans.

In case we resort to the predictable DJ idea, can anyone recommend a decent DJ for the evening?

Thanks for any help!

I’m quite scared by the fact that you have been exposed to a Cold Chisel cover band – Pretty sure they were outlawed at the end of the 90s. Where exactly have you been socialising in Canberra?

I’ll second the suggestion for Elena, Not only is she a great performer but she also books top lots of the top canberra and national performers. Elena is also a great event manager and has lots of contacts for non circus acts and entertainment.

I think her email is elena@highwire.comau if you want to contact her directly.

Thanks peterw!

I’m Elena Kirschbaum – I’m a juggler, acrobat, fire performer, MC and sideshow artist. I work with a couple of other circus performers in Canberra, and we work professionally around Canberra, interstate and internationally.

If you’d like more information then just shoot me an email. elena@highwire.com.au. We’d love to be involved!

I have no idea how much they cost, but google “The Bridge Between” – great local two man band.

These guys are good value, check them out as they play on Thursday evenings at the Belgian Beer Cafe in Kingston

How about a local stand up comedian to run a trivia night?

Brass’ere is a New Orleans brass band playing an eclectic mix of tunes and is certainly a little different in the live music scene. http://www.myspace.com/brassere

Elena Kirschbaum is a talented youmg woman who does circus stuff, if you want to go down that route – she’s an acrobalancer, juggler, and sideshow performer. Her MySpace page is http://www.myspace.com/circusell.

You could certainly get jugglers, firebreathers and drummers with the right connections (http://www.drumeffect.com.au/ for the drummers, and they’d probably help with the others).

For the music, I’d say get a real band or don’t bother with the music. If you’re dealing with postgrads, the very thought of ‘band-in-a-box (a couple of people playing ‘classic’ covers with a midi backup) will make people gouge out their ears. Band-in-a-box is only really good for *ahem* elderly types who like to ‘swing-dance’ to Kenny Rogers.

BMA have a decent band / DJ register (http://www.bmamag.com/home/)

I have a celebrity labrador I can pimp out at some very attractive rates. He loves a big crowd, too. And he’s not too shy to have his photo taken, so you can have a great reminder of your time together.

Warehouse Circus – I’ve used them previously for a corporate function and they were good value.

If you want entertainment of the musical variety, I can’t recommend ‘Tuchasoul’ enough. Steve and Rae have a beautiful sound and are two of the nicest guys I have met.

In the case of the DJ, I strongly suggest shooting over to inthemix.com.au and ask the Canberra forums. Of course that depends on what music you’d like, but Im sure the highly talented girls and guys would happily blow your guests away! For a price.
