Intruders broke into a Canberra backyard, killed the family dog and dragged its body away, police believe.

The 10-year-old german shepherd called Max disappeared from the Vogelsang Place, Flynn, property some time between 4.30am and 8.30am (AEDT) last Sunday.

His horrified owners found a trail of blood leading from their backyard to the side of their house.

“A blood trail was discovered from the rear yard and into the side yard of the residence, which indicates that the dog’s body had been dragged for a short distance, and then removed by persons unknown,” ACT Policing said in a statement.

Police have searched the neighbourhood but have not found the dog or any witnesses.

Officers say they are not aware of any complaints having previously been made about the dog.

Anyone who saw suspicious behaviour around Vogelsang Place early on Sunday morning is urged to call Crime Stoppers.

As a personal comment I will just say that I don’t care WHAT these people (who owned the dog) did, if anything at all, or whether the dog barked all night or attacked another person’s pet or child or whatever – nothing excuses animal cruelty. I’m posting this here in hope that someone in the area and reading this site noticed something to tell the police to catch and prosecute whoever murdered this poor dog.

Agree, Tori, I hope the poor animal’s death was very quick. And if not, and if someone heard it,….. well. I don’t know what to say.

I bet Anita Cobby’s killers started out on animals.

you know even though it doesn’t help any for the poor deceased dog (god i hope it’s death was swift…and you would logically think so if no one heard it happen and bothered to check out what was going on) and the family…. the psycho(s) that did this will live with their despicable act for the rest of their lives, and it will (unless they are actually completely nuts) haunt them forever…

This is an OUTRAGE!! i hope the police take this seriously, its a proven fact that people who kill/ torture animals from pleasure are more likely to become serial killers! what kind of sick fark goes and kills a poor defencless animal, it makes me frightened for my own pup. i hope they catch this sicko!

I feel very sorry for the poor dog and it’s family…. I wonder what provoked such an extreme act. As a victim of unending dog barking nuisance for years I have my suspicions that the perpetrators will be local.

I agree with leftie Maelinar. Maintain that psychological disorder.

El Turbo, that had crossed my mind, but I think it also may be a toss-up between some budding serial killer/rapist and a group of bored teenage boys. Trust me, the latter can do some sick, twisted sh-t when they’ve got the mob mentality thing going.

** Disclaimer **
This is leftie Mælinar

I think we should feel sorry for them. They have problems that need to be addressed. I really pity people who feel they need to harm pets.

It is unfortunate they have neither sought out, nor received, the psychological help they need to deal with their mental incapacities.

It’s scary that people like that are among us. And make no mistake, killing someone’s family animal, and someone’s family children is not a big leap. Some people act like this kind of crime is trivial, but it’s not, on many levels.

Someone must have heard or seen something, I do hope they talk to the police so at least the bereaved people can get soem kind of closure.

I wish our laws would be upgraded to make cruelty to animals the serious crime that it is.

Just give me a blow torch and a pair of pliers – let me get medievil on their arse.

What pricks. I remember how bad I felt when my dog got run over a few years back. Why the hell would you want to visit that on anyone?

To be fair, the font *is* different.

Geez I hope not. What some people can do to animals is beyond belief. They deserve to be hung.

skidnblair – yes it is a direct cut and paste…right down to the AAP at the base of the text which is why i put the astericks then my own personal comment. please excuse my neglect in omitting to delete ‘advertisement’ at the top of the post :/

It’s not like the punishment would be very harsh anyway – claim you’re a victim and they’ll probably let you go free.

My dogs are my family. Come after them and you will have me to deal with.

I would have no hesitations defending/avenging them as strongly as my own immediate family and would cop any legal recourse on the chin

not funny.

maybe someone is making a Frankendog and needed the skin…

Maybe the dog killed an intruder, then drag them away?

Unlikly I admitt, and random scary behavior. Stealing a do is bad enough, but killing then stealing a dog?

disgusting. Just down the road from me and I have two dogs. How could people physically do something like that? They deserve the same treatment.

This is a direct cust and paste from an AAP-linked source (down to the “Advertisement” text, which is an almost direct copy of the AFP Media statement. :\
