This just in from TAMS as the great garbage strike of ’13 comes to an end.

The ACT Government has announced that household waste and recycling collections have now almost returned to normal. Today’s scheduled collections have taken place. Recycling collections will be undertaken tomorrow (Saturday 31 August) in those suburbs which were missed last week.

Residents in those suburbs (with the exception of Narrabundah which was serviced last Saturday) are advised to have their recycling bin out for collection tomorrow.

Some areas in Dickson and Downer which did not get catch up green bin (waste) collections during the week will be collected again tomorrow morning.

Are TAMS including the pickup of rubbish blowing around the streets of the impacted suburbs that has come from overflowing bins being picked at by birds? Are the garbos getting out of their trucks to clean up that trash? No of course not!
I believe they should have been forced to do the extra catch-up collection runs out of personal time to make up for the little temper tantrum they threw.

OMG build a bridge you big baby.

Wow, what a bi, pithy, witty response. I’m almost impressed (not).[/quotemakeover
Yep I agree – build a bridge you big baby

I wish you were a candidate in the up coming election. You could have the industrial relations portfolio in Rabbits government…

Well I’m sure the ACT gov got the message. Give the contract to the company that can actually deliver it because with no staff at the competition it’s going to be very messy for a very long time.

I’m hoping the new company isn’t meeting the conditions of the tender so they can be tossed out.

Oh so you’re offering to come and clean up the mess are you? I’ll make sure to leave a pair of gloves out. Don’t forget about the rotting food scraps on the nature strip while you’re there.

OMG, build a bridge you big baby.

Is strike really the right word for it? If the government is stupid enough to give the contract to a company that has no staff and was only able to tender at a lower price by assuming they’d be able to hire the competition’s staff at a lower rate, you can’t really blame the staff who were fired for not wanting to walk into the exciting lower paying job offered to them.

(At least, that’s how it was explained in the previous post on the topic, perhaps I’ve misunderstood.)

No, I think you’ve got it just about right.

The dispute is very simple:

– The company currently servicing the contract employs drivers on four day weeks with a fifth day paid at overtime rates.
– The company that tendered and won the new contract proposes to employ the drivers on five day work weeks.

Although the strike action is aimed at the new company and the government, it affects the current company who really should not be subjected to industrial action as they are adhering to the EBA.

This wont be resolved quickly.

All of Narrabundah was serviced last Saturday? I don’t think so. Our green bin was emptied on Saturday but our recycling bin is still full to brim… please TAMS – make them come empty it!
