Floriade/Acton Carpark

Does anyone know what is going on with the Floriade car park?

There seems to be all these earth works going on there now. The carparks have been opened for use by the general public during weekdays because of the lack of parking in the city, but now you cant even park there. The secondary carpark further down has become overfilled now.

So the car park can service the Futsal pad?

So the Floriade/Acton Carpark has had the full commercial workover now but its empty every day! What’s going on? Is there no demand at $5 a day? How much did we spend on the oh-so-slow coversion to concrete & bitumen only to see it wasted?

The Section 63 development has a caveat on it stating that the developers must replace the carparks they are taking away as well as an extra % for the people who will be working in the office buildings. Unfortunately while they build/develop the site the parking will not exist any longer.

If you get in early enough there are about 25 free anarchic carspots on the dirt outside the performers entry of the Theatre.

Capitalise on the lowest unemployment figures in years, and move. SES staff will soon get the idea when they are the only dunderheads at work.

You could always live near the city and walk. The extra you pay in rent is about the same as petrol/parking/car expenses per week.

But its only for EL2s and up. Its not fair.

Cry me a river. Getting ahead has its perks. I have never had to pay for work parking in my life.

Actually, when you campare Civic to other CBDs around the country, there is plenty of (relatively) cheap and accessible parking. I worked in the centre of Brisbane for some time and was lucky enough to have basement parking, but before that became available and for those without that privilage, there very limited pay parking, sometimes up to $28 a day depending on where you parked.

What other cites do have that Canberra sadly lacks, is decent and reliable public transport. Expensive and limited inner city parking is great for forcing the plebs onto public transport.

The lack of parking in Civic isn’t drunken stupidity – it’s ACT Government policy (which is usually the same thing).

Sonic (and the various planning ministers) has previously stated that parking would always be restricted to encourage uptake of alternative transport, be it cycling, carpooling, inACTION, light zeppelin, whatever.

Oh boo hoo

There was plenty of paid parking left near Rydges at 8:40am this morning. It seems this is a whinge about the fact that the free parking is now harder to get. The free parking was a bonus to begin with – if you work in the city you have to get used to paying for parking or getting up early enough to grab a park.

And how about catching the bus or car pooling?

But its only for EL2s and up. Its not fair.

Its something of an irony that the honchos, who can definitely afford it, get the free parking, plenty of perks and somehow a free lunch most days a week, while the drones on the meagre pay packets pay for it all themselves.

Now if I can just become the bossman…

P1 you will find the owners of the new buildings will have to provide parking equal to a percentage of the number of people who will work in the buildings. It is never 100%.

My understanding that the lost carparks will have to be replaced on-site in addition to the car-parks that are required for any new office building.

I don’t know where you guys have gotten that impression, but it seems way off the mark. The recently completed DAFF building (wasn’t it built on a public car park?) has three levels of private underground parking – mostly reserved for SES – for eleven levels worth of staff. So I guess that percentage is pretty bloody low – probably around what, 2%!

And soon they’ll have even less parking with the one adjacent to the Police Station about to be gobbled up.

To call it stupid is to be offensive to really stupid people. I prefer to think that ACT planning is done by a few drunken chimps hurling dung at a map.

Pool Room!!

Our new building went up about a year and a half ago. Its got 3 levels of its own parking. But its only for EL2s and up. Its not fair.

I can’t fathom why people agree to work in civic. The parking thing’s become very silly. In city west, the top floor “cheap” parking would fill up just after dawn. I can’t see teh point in it. Government really has to diversify office buildings, put them in uncongested areas, preferably where people live.

and how do you rate articles, or is that just restricted to moderators or something?

There always seems to be plenty of parking in the paid area near the futsal, or is that time restricted?

off topic, how do you bring up posts from a week or two ago that have fallen off the screen, can’t seem to work it out?

I spend a fair bit of time in the City West area. Carparks have been removed, and replaced by buildings with, generally, nowhere near enough parking for the people working/living in them. The big carpark south of the cop shop is next, with the new owner using it for slightly pricier parking, pending closing it down and putting up yet more buildings. The parks get full early, even with the overflow area by the lake. And this is the side of town without lots of buses.

But the other problem though is to build an underground car park you have to dig up the current one, so for a period of a few years you are down.

If you had a choice of sense, sence (sic), or cents, which would you go for?

ACT Government goes for cents everytime. Sense doesn’t come into the equation, excuse the pun.

wouldn’t it make more sence to build an underground one under one of those office developments in city west….

THIS was in the Canberra Times on the 25th February.

ABC news on Saturday morning (I think?) announced that it would be converted to paid parking shortly. Some months ago Hargreaves announced that there would be a carpark installed on the site temporarily as parking space on London Circuit has been sold to build on. At the time there was some nimby-noise about it being a blight on the lakeside.
