The Department of Territory and Municipal Services have announced they’re going to be giving away free micro-chipping for any cats that have missed out on the process to date:

Canberrans have an opportunity to get their cat microchipped for free at Domestic Animal
Services between 10.30 am and 12.30 pm on Wednesday 22 December 2010.

“It is a requirement in the ACT for any cat over the age of 12 weeks old which is sold to be microchipped,” Registrar, Domestic Animal Services, Peter Dinan said.

“Microchipping allows cats that have been found to be quickly identified and returned to their owner.

“While Domestic Animal Services traditionally deals mainly with dogs, we are now going to start offering a microchipping service for cats. This will be done for the discounted rate of $40 which compares very favourably to anywhere else in Canberra.

“To draw attention to this new service, we are encouraging people to come along to a special promotion between 10.30 am and 12.30 pm on Wednesday 22 December 2010 where we will microchip cats for free.

If you want to take advantage of the special offer you need to email communityengagement@act.gov.au by 12pm, Monday 20 December.

The shelter is on Mugga Lane in Symonston.

Interesting concept. Perhaps they could implant gps enabled chips into the animals (cats, dogs, turtles, whatever…) and if the pet gets loose into a nature park or a woden drain, they press a button and *BOOM*, the cat asplodes. We can call it the Capt RAAF chip.

and why are they not micro-chipping dogs for free also? Because dogs are not a problem, dog owners are not the problem. Cats and cat owners are the problem.

This seems backwards to me. It seems like the government giving a roof and 3 meals a day to someone who broke the law, but for the homeless you can fend for yourself.

Why should responsible dog owners have to pay to get a chip, while irresponsible cat owners dont? The only reason I can think of, is to build a register of cats, so that the owners can be hit with an annual renewal fee for the chip, and enable some form of tracking of the cats/owners.

So does this mean I can play imported games on my Cat?

Only if it’s an iCat4.

Can I get exploding chips for cats with a mobile phone number to set the chip of? Ah the sound of exploding cats that should keep the native birds safe

No, you cannot.

Splitters…

No… The People’s Front of Judea!

[insert humour chip now and refer to earlier post on Kitten Rescue]
I am sure the idiot single mothers are the primary evil-doers in this, as in all things. Let’s round ’em up, put ’em in a cage with all the felines and make ’em fight for supremacy. Then let’s eat the winner. Then, and only then, can we truly focus our bigotry on the true enemy …

Judean People’s Front?

Yeah, but it voids your warranty.

Does this mean I can improved the performance of my cat with a new chip?

Too late: got the red ring of death.

And before Capt RAAF or any of the other cat haters get in, this does not involve cats and a wood chipping machine.

Too late.

Chipping your cat means it gains 15% more power but uses 5% less fuel.

Don’t point the finger of blame at the irresponsible cat owners either, it’s all of you! You encounter feral cats and feed them, you free them from drains and release them, you leave a dish of water by your back door in summer so the wandering cat you see now and again can have a drink.

It is your fault!

Captain RAAF10:12 am 17 Dec 10

If it’s similar to wood chipping, I can have a dozen cats there pronto!
