Fringe 09 Launched – party goes on

The 2009 Fringe Festival kicked off last night in Civic Square and wow, it was one hell of a party.

To normal people, outside the arts world, this might all sounds a little daunting, so I’ll explain.

There’s a big tent at the bottom of the steps to the Canberra Theatre. It’s free to go into and fun stuff is happening at one end. There are tables and chairs in the middle. There is a bar at the other end.

Walk in, sit down, enjoy the fun stuff, drink heavily, go jump in the fountains.

See, not so hard after all?

Simple fun, free apart from the booze which, while not cheap, isn’t extortionate either.

It’s on every night ’till the 14th, and it runs to 1am. If you feel the need to plan here’s a program.

Slideshow of last night’s festivities below.

Funniest thing: I approached a couple of the frolickers just as they were removing various items of clothing, and one of them almost froze until I got closer and said g’day to one of the CMC brass and the photographer. The bloke who froze saw my all black clothes and official-looking emblem and thought I was part of the ‘Fun Police’ come to close them down and get them out of the water.

Yeah, I’m guessing the ‘St Albans Folk Festival’ (the logo in question) aren’t too concerned about fountain-waders on a balmy Canberra evening, 350km and two months away from where they are!

It was a good night, my friend did a bit of fire twirling and he was literally on fire! Good to see you there JB.

Whacky people being whacky in whacky clothes for the sake of being whacky is, um, whacky.
I’m way too straight edged to go to that. My whackiness is lacking… ness. Yo.

Looks like Hargreaves hasn’t quite gelled with his new posse, but I’m sure Steve Pratt is shitting himself all the same.

You don’t like music, humour, and scantily clad beautiful people accompanied by heavy drinking?

That’s a very straight edge indeed.
