Gary Nairn: ACT out to get Queanbeyan

Federal member for Eden-Monaro Gary Nairn has had a whinge to the ABC about the ACT Government’s secret plans to put Queanbeyan retailers out of business.

The focus of his outrage is the new shopping centre to be built in Fyshwick. Originally planned as a bulky goods outlet, the centre now appears to be going to include “regular shops” and, I think, some factory outlets.

“Such a huge amount of additional retail in what effectively looks like a big shopping mall could have a very negative impact on the businesses in Queanbeyan,” Mr Nairn said.

He also said the proposal breached the ACT Government’s own planning policy.

But really, do we care? I’ve only ever been shopping in Queanbeyan once and that was at a wrecker’s helping my boyfriend find parts for his car. That said, I’m not convinced I would go shopping in Fyshwick either unless there was some major incentive, like (shock horror) different shops and probably better public transport.

Oh Bollocks you are truly a moron. I guess by setting up shop in Qbn you are chasing the flannelette shirt brigade and single mums on the pension. Great business acumen there!!!! LOL!!!!!

The line being run by Mr Nairn is the same as that run by the owners of the Airport who are building a Direct Factory Outlet (DFO) in competition with the DFO to be built on the site sold by the ACT Gov.

Hmm are Mr Nain’s concerns a snow job?

Stuff:
* Gary Nairn’s actually a front bencher now, and Chris He-of-the-glassy-stare Pyne now occupies Nairn’s old over-shoulder seat in the house
* There IS a shopping centre being built at the airport which is out of ACT Government control, but there’s also another planned for Fyshwick
* I thought cities were girls

A number of you are a sad bunch of wannabes.

I live in Canberra (Ainslie)but have my own business in Queanbeyan.

For all you public servants and “private sector” IT contractors who live in suburbs such as Aranda,Melba,Dickson,Holt,Braddon (just like Double Bay – not!!!!!!!!) and so forth to put shit on Queanbeyan as some backwards redneck country is laughable.

Talk about big fish in a little sea.

It needs to be so Queanbeyanites can afford to drive to Canberra to shop.

Haha Canberra suckers petrol is around 10-15c cheaper in Queanbeyan.

haha queanbeyan has penis envy

People are going to shop where they want to shop.
getting upset that newer and better shops are going to open is just petty..

If the shops are good and the prices are good people will shop there.. It doesn’t matter about the location so much.

Maybe instead of whinging he should work on getting his City sorted out…

The obvious answer to this would to kindly ask that all of the QBNites who do their shopping in Canberra locales on they way back from work, to disregard better value, quality and range (and the fact that you can communicate to other shoppers and shop assistants without grunting and throwing rocks)and do their shopping in Queanbeyan to protect and support their local businesses.

Other country towns have pride in their own industries and businesses, perhaps Mr Nairn could start there, by using a model and idea similar to that used in Bega, Bungendore and Cooma.

Try “there are”…

Besides, here are some things you can get in Fyshwick which you just can’t in Qybn…

Isn’t the shopping centre in Fyshwick actually being built at the airport? Which not under the control of the ACT government?

The sjops in Qybn are woeful. Has anyone ever actually been the the lame excuse for a “shopping centre” there? The only thing of interest is Sanity and I would not drive out all the way there just for a CD.

If Qybn want to attract shoppers then get some up to date and new stores and decent cafes etc.

Gary Nairn is just another whinging little prick. Who gives a toss what this puffed up back-bencher thinks. Is he suggesting that people shouldn’t be free to decide where and how they spend their money? Wanker.

I grew up in Queanbeyan, so I get to criticise…

On a recent Sunday lunchtime I was walking through the main street of Queanbeyan with some friends, looking for a place for lunch. The only places open were the Central Cafe, with a line out the door, and pubs. Several nice looking restuarants were closed, as were all the shops in between. If Queanbeyan expects to compete with Canberra for retail business, then the businesses need to be open. Sunday’s are often a day for discretionary shopping, and if Queanbeyan doesn’t want to play, then they shouldn’t whinge about not being supported. I think if the main street underwent some further work, and some nice cafe’s and restaurants were actually open, they would do quite well.

I’ve only been to Spotlight QBN shopping. And now that there is a boycott on them cost of their IR policies I probably wont’ go to Q at all.
