GEOCON, Canberra’s largest builder and developer, have been recognised for their commitment to exceptional Work Health and Safety at the Master Builders and Cbus Excellence in Building Awards, held at the National Convention and Exhibition June 24th.
The awards, which feature some of the best builders in the country, pay tribute to those companies that demonstrate brilliance within the building industry.
It’s not the first award for GEOCON. But for Damon Smith, General Manager of Construction, it’s one that goes to the very heart of their organisation.
“Workplace Health and Safety is everything to us,” he says. “Our work is predominantly high rise buildings, so safety is paramount in everything we do.
Our company ethos centres on working in a safe manner. One of our core values is ‘Working safely wherever we have a presence’. So to take this one out was particularly sweet.”
GEOCON also prides itself on creating a strong team culture, taking 40 staff members to the awards dinner.
“We’re a big family company, and we don’t do anything individually. So we wanted to take the team along. We pride ourselves on having a really strong culture, and the safety culture flows from that.”
The company also made news at the start of the year by going against the norm and offering a company-specific Enterprise Bargaining Agreement with their construction workers, giving them greater flexibility and benefits than traditional industry agreements provide.
