Global Battle of the Bands - Canberra's All Guns Blazing Named Third Best in Australasia

I was up in Sydney last night, making the most of the Canberra public holiday. I was watching the Australasian Final of the Global Battle of the Bands. 16 bands from across Australia and New Zealand strutted their stuff in an attempt to reach London for the grand final later this year.

The Australasian Final was held in the State Room of the recently renovated Sydney Hilton. It was a fun night due to the quality of the bands, but I have to say the venue was dreadful. Low ceiling, absent ventillation, poorly stocked and overly expensive bar (which even closed way before the last band had played) made it an effort for some of our crew to not leave the gig from time to time for a break. The Hilton made me grateful that we have such great music venues in Canberra. Seriously, the venue for the ACT regional final earlier in the year, The Basement, had a much better atmosphere.

The winners of the ACT final, All Guns Blazing, put in an amazing performance last night. Whilst I personally thought they were the best band (bias aside), they were awarded third place. Nonetheless, a Canberra band beating so many great Australian and New Zealand bands is a bloody fantastic effort. Congrats to Sepi and the rest of the crew!

The gig will apparently be shown on Channel V. Channel V haven’t updated their website at time of posting – http://channelv.com.au/V/Gig.aspx?ID=739 – but check it out. It’s great for local Canberra bands to have such exposure.

As for all you local musos out there, the Global Battle of the Bands will be on again next year. Put it in your diaries for early next year: http://www.myspace.com/gbobaustralia. Let’s see Canberra represented in London in 2009!
