Greens appeal Kangaroo Cull

The Greens NSW have appealed to the ACT government not to proceed with killing more than 1,600 kangaroos.
“The mass kangaroo cull permitted by the ACT government should be cancelled on the grounds of animal cruelty and because there is no evidence that the removal of the animals benefits the local environment”.
“The Greens NSW Animal Welfare Group has examined this issue closely. Many members have raised concerns about the lack of data and evaluation to support the government’s assertions about the benefits of the cull”.
“If kangaroo populations are damaging local ecosystems then all non-lethal options should be thoroughly explored before a cull is approved. We are concerned that once again the ACT government has signed off on a brutal cull of kangaroos without evaluating the real impact of the population and more humane methods of control. The frequency of the cull also suggests that the ACT kangaroo management plan is not delivering the desired outcome. We have written to the Environment Minister Shane Rattenbury urging that he does not allow the cull to proceed and he looks for other way to manage the flora and fauna under threat,” Mr Greenland said.
