Looks like the Federal Libs aren’t the only ones with problems.

Former Labor Minister John Hargreaves plans to oppose the sale of Clare Holland House.

He’ll make his position tomorrow but word is he thinks the hospice is being used as a bargaining chip.

He also has a former MLA on his side.

Let’s see what happens.

“If I were a ‘patient’ of the Hospice, and about to meet my maker (or whatever),”

You are far less likely to meet your maker if the nuns are in charge – having had my life life saved at Calvary, and friend die unnecessarily at Woden, the idea of local govt being able to kill even more people through their incompetence revolts me.

I’m a Catholic and originally thought the sale would be a good idea. However, I have changed my mind since hearing that symbols of other faiths have been removed. If this is true, I think it is intolerant and exclusivist. The Hospice should remain a facility where all feel welcomed and supported regardless of faith or lack thereof.

Nice to see Hargreaves being a thorn in the side, following his shafting by Sonic…

Katy Gallagher is in today’s CT claiming that the Greens’ commitment to not block appropriations bills locks them into agreeing to this sale linkage.

Hell of a stretch that.

If you were to cop that sort of argument, they’d be nothing but rubber stamps, because almost everything comes down to the budget at some point.

She should also know that it is an up-front Greens policy to not trade across issues, and therefore to bundle two unrelated matters is to run the risk of both being canned.

With the best will in the world, God Botherers do just that.

Totally at odds with my beliefs.

They accomodate all beliefs… you don’t have to be Catholic to stay there

I have tried to understand what is behind the opposition to selling Clare Holland House but the news grabs only seem to show people saying “hands off our hospice” which is not very informative.

So please forgive my ignorance on this matter, but if the Catholics already run the services provided in Clare Holland House, what exactly would change if they bought the building too?

Disclaimer: I am not a Catholic and I don’t live in the hospice.

It’s very concerning that the Catholics may get their hands on the hospice. The hospice needs to be secular.

On first read: yay Hargreaves!

But in the dead-tree version, he said he sill vote with the ALP in the assembly, even though this contravenes what he believes to be party policy. So NOT yay. No deep division either.

Anyway, the ALP and Greens are having another little pre-scripted argument, with Gallagher saying the Greens have to support the whole thing because of the Parliamentary agreement: http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/12/01/2758701.htm.

Interestingly, Jeremy Hanson was on 666 this morning touting much the same line. Working very hard to push the “ALP has deep divisions” line.

Canberra libs touting this line… “pot, kettle, black”
