“Chief Minister Jon Stanhope has reappointed John Hargreaves to the Ministry, but has issued a clear warning that no further lapses will be tolerated.

I don’t think it is double standards. But I do agree that he prob done it time and time again, without being caught.

Reeks of double standards to me.

If your average courier driver was caught at this level, they would cop 6months suspension, and have trouble keeping their job.

I say it’s the suit and grey hair – Thats what convinced the judge. Hmmm.

Two of his statements about the event are inconsistent.

1. I didn’t think I was over the limit.
2. This is the first and last time I have driven drunk

If on this occasion he was not aware he was drunk, how can he categorically state that he has never driven drunk before, as obviously he is unable to tell when he is intoxicated.

Yes, that’s what I was thinking too, but I thought that for a change I’d give him the benefit of the doubt! 🙂

My gut feeling is that he’s a serial drink-driver who’s luck finally ran out.

because it’s highly likely that this wasn’t a one-off thing. he knew he would be drinking and as usual he would drive home. IMO

I can’t get over Hargreaves’ stupidity: he knew he was going to a Budget luncheon (where it was no doubt obvious that alcohol would be consumed!) so why didn’t he either organise to be picked up by someone or order a taxi to take him home afterwards?

I guess when you’re earning $165 000+/annum it’s probably a little difficult to afford a taxi ride every now and again.

Yes Hugo. Drink driving laws are all a conspiracy by the states to revenue raise.

Nothing at all to do with safety.

I say we throw away the brethalysers and go back to the good ol’ days.

Dimwit.

It is interesting that the tut tutters in the media are pointing out that he was “almost double the legal limit” quite true. But the legal limit was once (an quite scientifically).08 and only went down to 0.05 to match the states and their quest for new money raising opportunities.
