The ACT Government today invited members of the community to provide feedback on the draft plans for the upgrade of public spaces at the Hughes shops.
“Members of the community are invited to attend drop-in information sessions at the shops on Wednesday 11 December and Thursday 12 December 2013. Residents will be able to view the draft design plans and provide feedback on the proposed upgrades,” said Diana Hill, Manager, Design and Development, Territory and Municipal Services.
“The proposed upgrade of the Hughes shops will revitalise the area, providing locals and traders with a safer, more accessible and attractive centre. The draft plans include improvements to lighting, carpark arrangements and pedestrian links to the shops as well as upgrades to the pavement, steps and ramps. The central plaza area will also be enhanced to improve the overall amenity of the area.”
Ms Hill said the draft plans had been developed after consultation with the community in July and August 2013. The plans incorporate feedback such as strengthening the visual cohesion of the centre and improving the plaza to encourage greater use of the area.
“I encourage anyone who visits Hughes shops to come along to the drop-in sessions and provide feedback on the draft design plans. Alternatively, they can visit www.timetotalk.act.gov.au to view the draft plans and complete an online survey.”
Ms Hill said the work is part of the Government’s ongoing investment in improving access, safety and amenity at local shopping centres across the ACT.
“Forward design studies for minor upgrades at seven shopping centres including Torrens, Theodore, Lyneham, Griffith, Cook, Charnwood and Banks, are scheduled for completion by the end of this year. Additional forward design studies are also being undertaken at Evatt, Florey, Rivett and the small local centre on Mannheim Street in Kambah,” Ms Hill said.
