Hi there all,

I’m part of a group of students establishing a student housing co-op and we’re about to start a 6-bedroom place in Havelock House (check out http://canberracoop.wordpress.com/ for our blog, http://www.facebook.com/pages/Canberra-Student-Housing-Co-operative/112744285498694 for the facebook).

We’re working on a shoestring (i.e no) budget, and are trying to be as thrifty as possible. The following is a list of things we are looking to inherit/acquire. If you can help we will be eternally grateful and maybe even name it after you (eg ‘the John C. Murphyson memorial couch cover’).

We are especially in the market for a industrial size fridge/freezer. If you have any of these and want to donate, please drop us a line at canberracoop@gmail.com.

  • Fridge and Freezer (the bigger the better)
  • Indoor Plants
  • Curtains/someone who can make curtains
  • A nice horizontal blind
  • Bins
  • Big food canisters for all of our lentils and quinoa
  • Artworks
  • Set of good knives
  • Tablecloth for a really long table
  • Desk lamps
  • Awesome sound system
  • Board games (twister especially pls)
  • Big bookshelves
  • Tall lamps
  • Rugs (beautiful rugs only)
  • Rice cooker
  • Kettle
  • Microwave
  • Big teapot
  • Pretty clock
  • Espresso machine (dreaming big here)
  • Clothes washing detergent en masse
  • Broom
  • Projector (for film nights)
  • Beanbags
  • 1st Aid Supplies

Give the kids a break. I think Canberra residents have so much excess “stuff” in there house that
they would happily get rid of given half the chance- who can blame these kids for putting down a wish-list? If you don’t ask youll never know.

In the spirit of “If you don’t ask” … I’d like a free house down the coast for a couple of weeks, preferably before the holidays. It would also need an awesome sound system

And views of the ocean. Clear views mind you, not obscured by trees and houses.

And preferably near a pub.

A classy pub only though. They must have Cascade on tap.

As the OP has no doubt recognised though, you have to pick your audience/target market.

Rice cooker?! Use a pot and some fire! You don’t need an appliance to cook rice.

Rice cookers are the best kitchen appliance ever, you wont find an asian resteraunt without one.

True. but no Asian restaurant has ever asked me to give them one gratis.

I remember parties at Havelock House when I was at uni. Or should I clarify, I remember turning up to those parties. The guys there had some pretty good contacts and some pretty strong stuff.

Description as copied from the “I lived at Havelock House” Facebook page.

-Havelock House, Northbourne Avenue, Canberra. Shared housing like no other…

Be it the Goon Parties, Stoned Escapades, Water Fights or Jammin on the Laundry Roof, if you’ve lived at havers, you’re part of an elite crowd…

Y’know, part time work isn’t that hard to find in Canberra if you’re willing. If you’re not willing then you probably shouldn’t be at uni. And why do you need a fridge? 2 minute noodles won’t go off if you leave them in a milk crate.

Surprised you left out essentials like someone to provide the food, rent, cleaning, laundry…

If you want nice shiny things then perhaps make like the rest of us and work for them. I can appreciate that your students but I’m not sensing a whole lot of genuine need here. Especially if you only want the “pretty” and/or “beautiful” things. :\

Espresso machines, board games and projectors for movie nights? You need a reality check.

Now that Gen Y has cleared uni, make way for Gen ID (stands for ‘I Deserve…’).

So, what’s the punchline?

“Espresso machine (dreaming big here)”… don’t get me wrong, I have a Jura. But it’s a bastard to maintain and chews up cash to feed it decent beans. Same story for manual machines.
Buy a drip filter machine for $50, get a deal going with one of the campus cafes to piggy back on their bulk bean orders. Cheaper to maintain, no fights over who used it last and has to clean it and make about 8 cups in a few minutes.

“1st Aid Supplies”… good thinking, but also make sure you have at least 1 fire blanket and 1 Class 2A:40B:E fire extinguisher, both located centrally near cooking areas.

You have to be joking? I’m sorry but, Indoor Plants, curtains, blinds, bins, artworks, sound system, games, bookshelves, decorative lighting, clock, expresso machine, projector and beanbags are not “necessities”. Plus you can build everything with milk-crates.

You don’t need an industrial fridge/freezer for a 6 bedroom house. The uni lodge 5 bedroom apartments have 1 average sized fridge that fits everything. You just have to be efficient with space.

This is the biggest wind up in history, right?
