It looks as though another suburb’s shops are facing an uncertain future. Last night I noticed that the Higgins Foodworks shop is newly decorated with “For Lease”stickers. A quick google reveals that a small unit for medical / consulting is also available – this I presume is the doctors surgery.
This is of course in addition to the Post Office’s original shop location:

The supermarket has been closed for a couple of weeks.
I was told by another tenant at the shops that they were booted for failing to pay rent for around a year.
Kippax and Hawker and Jammo so close by … highly mobile modern population … they just can’t compete. Same problem for Page & Scullin. Unless they’re doing something unique and worthwhile (like at Macquarie), their days are numbered.
Yet Cook shops manage to survive..

Cook shops – the supermarket anyway – have survived while all else have seemingly disappeared. But they they run a good operation, when I lived close I was a regular. Holt shops, on the other hand has (for the last year or so at least) been the kind of place where you check the use by dates on the dairy products very carefully before purchase…

Gross. Duffy was always a pretty poxy shops but Stopped going to Duffy when we had a emergency and needed to buy baby food( my wife made 99% of all baby food) and I got home and she informed me its out of date by over a year.
Was in holt the other week to grab a beer after work and it was pretty Grimm. Holder is the same.not a great deal on the shelves.
Nick and George run a great shop at Cook.
I happily use their business, (and the Belconnen Fresh Food Markets), instead of Coles at Jamison. The Hawker IGA is a useful shop as well.
Anyone know about the Doctor there at Higgins?
Its also the Looney Fed Legacy Factor.
Aranda Shops had the parking away from the Supermarket, Cook and Maquarie have it right in front.
Page is weird, went to the takeaway and it was a struggle to find it from the road.
Having shops planned by Bureaucrats rather than where people want them hasn’t worked well.
Can we sue the Feds ?

Actually when they were designed they were fine. Simple fact is our shopping habits have changed, so what worked 25 years ago doesn’t now. Its called progress and evolution.

Apart from Ricardo’s what makes Macquarie (am presuming you mean Jamison, not Macquarie shops?) unique and worthwhile?
Having lived in Higgins for 25+ years, with my mother still living there. I rarely visited the shops after we were all done attending Higgins primary school a good 15 years old.
On the rare occasion I did go to the shops it was to pick up a parcel from the Post Office or to duck into the chemist. (Service there is always amazing)
I do remember shopping at th supermarket one public holiday when Woolies was closed. Several items on the shelf were past the used by date. Couldn’t even get some milk that had more than 2 days before it expired.
Doesn’t surprise me that the supermarket closed.

I agree 100% with this sentiment, I did my best to ‘use it or lose it’ and support the supermarket but as you say so much of the stock was way past its shelf-life or way overpriced.
Makes me glad I’m in Watson. The takeaway joint is okay, the pharmacy and Joeys Kitchen are pretty good and the IGA is fantastic. Never tried the Chinese take away but it seems to do okay.
I lived in Holt for a while and it was terrible. I’d take the 20min walk to Kippax over the 5 min walk to Holt any day.
And has anyone else noticed the IGA at Mitchell is now empty?

No, not talking about Jammo.
Macquarie shops on Lachlan St; the first of the Discount Pharmacy chain and Kinh Do Vietnamese restaurant. Easy to get to, easy parking, clean & tidy. Business seems to be booming.
I use them whenever I can.

No he’d mean Macquarie shops. Tidy little complex with a Vietnamese restaurant and Macquarie Discount Pharmacy, no supermarket.

I wouldn’t describe a chemist and take-away as unique. Glad to here the restaurant recovered after its closure. http://www.canberratimes.com.au/act-news/vietnamese-restaurant-fined-over-cat-in-roof-20120806-23pyy.html

You finished Higgins Primary at the age of 15?
No wonder peeps bag Belco…
When I lived in Holt many many many years ago if the old bloke that owned it served you and you were a kid you had to very carefully count your change and know the prices, he would always short change children.
