garema place

CanberraCBD have announced the planned ice rink in Garema Place is confirmed as going ahead.

We are very pleased to confirm that our major project for this Winter will be installing an ice skating rink in Garema Place. The rink will be open to the public for day and night time skating sessions during the month of July.

The team behind the recent Groovin’ in the City (Tom-Tom Marketing & Events) have engaged Sydney company Stars on Ice to install and manage the rink which will also host a number of special events and performances. Think fashion shows, dancing, ice hockey demonstrations, specialty European food, ice carving, Christmas in July, speed skating, DJ’s, markets, buskers and special school holiday events. There is sure to be something for everyone of all ages from 5 to 95. The program will also feature Monday-Friday 45 minute skate sessions targeted at the City’s office workers who wish to do something different with their lunch hour.

The skating area will be a 15m x 30m structure, open air with a roof covering to allow for lighting. The rink will accommodate 200 skaters per session and there will be an additional sales and skate hire tent, plus tiered seating areas, gas heaters and public toilet facilities. Patrons will be able to purchase Alpine themed specialty food items like poffertjes, hot chocolate, mulled wine and German sausages, and an ice machine will be added to further enhance the atmosphere.

The businessminded amongst you should note they’re also after market stall operators.

If Canberra CBD Ltd and Tom-Tom Marketing & Events want to ” enhance the atmosphere ” and “attract shoppers back into the city centre. “

could they perhaps liaise with the Centrelink, ACTCOSS or AFP to do something about the various individuals in Garema Place who continually ask for money, then abuse you if you refuse.

I’m not unsympathetic but it gets a bit thin after a while especially when the said individual is munching on a free sandwich from the St VdP van and I’m going home after a 10 hour day and no lunch

Oh, get over it. You can just say no and keep walking.

And then, as if to balance that out, we do some things — and this, in my mind, is one — that are truly cringe worthy, ‘P*ss Weak World’ efforts. It is as if there needs to be this constant reminder that the place is just a big NSW country town. Just sayin’ . . .

So what? If they can put a temporary ice rink in Melbourne, does that make Melbourne a big NSW country town? I reckon this is a great idea and I suspect this will be pretty popular.

Not at all!

Makes it a big Victorian country town.

Mmm yum. I love Gluhwein in cold weather and it will surely “enhance the atmosphere”.

You know . . . we do some things here in Canberra that are just fabulous and truly worthy of a nation’s capital. Sorry to be the rain on this parade, but this is possibly the silliest thing I’ve ever heard. Well besides the installation of more public art that is.

Gives the junkies something to do at least.

Speed skating? On a 15 x 30 ‘tank’? Riiiigghht. 200 skaters per session? On a 15 x 30 ‘tank’? OooooKaaay. Alpine themed Poffertjes? What is this? A Kitsch Brothers production?

Not a bad idea at all! 🙂

Actually sounds like a great idea.
In countries with cold climates and natural outdoor ice rinks, they seem to be popular places to go.

Ice hockey demonstrations? Don’t stuff around with demonstrations – play proper games, 7pm Friday night in the city and you would get a great crowd.

Friday Fight Night

I am very excited by this. My other half is a very tall lad and watching him skate will be absolute gold. Seriously though, I think this will be a really good event. Something to look forward to during the long cold winter.
