ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to an act of indecency in McKellar last night (Tuesday, January 8).

Around 8.50pm, a woman was cycling along the bike path adjacent to William Slim Drive when her bike was hit from behind by a male cyclist. She fell to the ground and was dragged into nearby grassland by a man.

A male cyclist riding along the path heard the struggle and stopped to provide assistance to the woman. She was taken to Calvary Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the incident.

The man was last seen riding towards Belconnen on a dark-coloured BMX style bike. He is described as being between 183-190cm (6’ – 6’3”) tall with a solid build.

Police are urging anyone who witnessed the incident, or anyone who saw a man matching the description above riding around the Lake Ginninderra area on a dark-coloured BMX style bike last night to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the website www.act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.

This isn’t the only place people have discussed this and at least one person on here has questioned why she was out so late, so yeah, I will maintain the rage as long as people keep placing blame assault victims.

Calling it risk minimisation is still putting the blame back on the victim.

Why do you continue to push this point when you are completely and utterly wrong?
Again, nobody is blaming the victim. The perpetrator is entirely responsible for their actions. Nobody should be raping anybody.

Unfortunately the reality is that sickos do rape people. That’s the world we live in. It is in the best interest of everybody to minimise their risk. Unfortunately, part of that is not travelling down dark alleys alone. Not travelling down secluded bike paths alone at night. Not believing the guy that there is free candy in his van.

Again, you can choose to live in a fantasy land where everybody is nice to eachother, or you can be realistic and understand that people do get raped and murdered, and minimise your risk of becoming a victim. Entirely your call.

A male using the sam MO was arrested, yesterday, in a state in Australia far away from the ACT.

8.50 in summer’s not that late. The sun’s only been down half an hour and there’d still be a bit of light in the western sky. Bad things can happen at any time. Wasn’t some girl attacked around Lake G at lunchtime last year?

I’ve ridden this path at least 13 thousand times morning and night over the last 22 years. I’ve never seen anything dodgy in all that time. Only once did I have to think quick to avoid injury, and that was when anti kangaroo culling protesters were driving along the path in their 4wd. This incident is entirely the fault of the perp.

A person has the right to walk down a busy street alone, after having a few drinks with friends, to head home to her husband that is but only a few hundred meters away, without being killed.

She never made it.

Your call.

Agreed. It’s not victim blaming, it is suggesting risk minimisation.

You SHOULD be able to walk down a dark alley drunk and naked. Doing so is quite risky and best avoided. It’s called common sense, although it is quite poorly named…

Unfortunately we live in a world full of messed up people, and minimising your risk just makes sense.

I think it was in reference to #11

I think the posters read something that isn’t there, even in #11.

I said it is a lovely cycling track, but probably not so lovely at 8:50pm.

Not once did I ever mention what the victim should or should not have done.

I can’t believe people are saying things like “why was she out at 8:50pm”.. infuriating, victim blaming mentality. A person should be able to ride a bike at any time of the night without being attacked. I walk my dogs there often and I am not back by 9pm, should I be raped or attacked now, I guess I deserve it!

You know, I’m trying to see anywhere above your post where someone has said “why was she out at 8:50pm”?

Ah they must have all been deleted, you maintain the rage.

So basically only crime and pedos have a right to be out after dark when it’s cooler in Summer.
Check.

Has anyone seen what type of bike Mr G rides?

That’s funny, the anti-Gillespie trolls here thought I drove a Commodore, when I spoke out about speed cameras.

So now you think I am one of the bike-riders who ride on roads where cars drive?

Anti-Gillespie trolls, get a grip!

OK TEAM AGT, bring it in tight and listen up. We have to stick to the game plan on this one, because I think he has rumbled us. Comic and Gamer Nerd – you organise some Ant-Gillespie screen shots. Pork Hunt, you need to comment on everything. Everything. How Canberran – you keep shaking that tagline. C’mon guys – stick to the strengths in our Anti-Gillespie trolling. Now get out there!

Blimey…I thought acts of indecency were normally along the lines of an old bloke flashing his todger at a bunch of schoolgirls, not knocking a woman off a bike and dragging her into a bush? Isn’t that assault and attempted rape?

Yeah, they throw around all sorts of colourful terms to refer to some OUTRAGEOUS act, usually of a (SHOCK—HORROR!) sexual nature. “Indecent” act. “Indecent” assault. “Sexual” assault. It’s not “rape” anymore.

Whatever happened to calling a spade a spade?

Totally agree. This attack is in no way the fault of the victim. It doesn’t matter what time it was, what she was wearing, if she was pretty or not. The fact is she was sexually assaulted by a vicious predator when she should have been riding safely home.

On Tuesday night after work I left where I was at 10.45 pm and got home at 11.25 pm. I ride home regularly late at night and won’t stop doing it. But i have lights you can see from mars and have a pretty good “looks dodgy” radar. I have had one serious incident in about 30 years. Blame the mongrel who did it, not the victim for being there.

You’d think so.

Has anyone seen what type of bike Mr G rides?

That stretch of bike path that passes under Ginninderra drive and along the lake has seen these type of sordid activities before, in the last two years there has been at least two to three incidents of females riders jumped from the grassland that verges on the edge of the lake..Its relatively difficult to see from either William Slim or Ginninderra drive.

But 8:50pm? The place is also perfect for ferals to prey on defenceless victims in the dark, as this incident shows.

bit lost here …………???

Given some other things he’s written here, I assumed MG was being facetious, and JB appears to have thought likewise. If that’s not the case, then I fully concur with MG’s post.

This would be the first time in history he has defended a woman in a case like this. Normally he is all about blaming the victim or saying the victimis a liar.

Clearly he was trying to be sarcastic in his first post.

Totally agree. It would have taken no small amount of courage I reckon when he could have kept on riding with no one the wiser. Kudos!

Those are lovely cycling tracks away from the road and along the shoreline of the lake.

But 8:50pm? The place is also perfect for ferals to prey on defenceless victims in the dark, as this incident shows.

Some of these places, including Glebe Park in the city, should have signs to the effect of:

WARNING: PERVS ABOUT.
DO NOT PASS THROUGH AFTER DARK.

If you think such sign is ridiculous then check out Japan (okay, admit that it is slightly wackier than other countries).

Well done to the third cyclist who stopped to help the woman.

Disgusting.
Poor girl.

mongrel bastard….

Was going to make a smart-arse comment about cyclists, but decided this isn’t the thread to do it.

I hope that the woman makes a quick and complete recovery, and good on the following male cyclist for stopping and providing assistance.
