ACT Policing and NSW Police will be increasing patrols around arterial roads in and out of the ACT this long weekend as part of ‘Operation Stay Alert’.
From 8-11 June, police will join forces to target speeding, drink-driving and driver fatigue as motorists head to the snowfields for the beginning of the 2012 ski season.
Motorists are reminded that double demerit penalties will be in place from Friday 8 June to midnight, Monday 11 June.
Acting Superintendent of Traffic Operations Rod Anderson said it was important that drivers practised safe driving habits to keep our roads safe over the long weekend period.
“Police would encourage everyone to be patient, obey speed limits and take regular breaks to minimise the risk of an incident on our roads”.
“Traditionally long weekends see a higher number of drivers on our roads. Planning your trip and taking turns to drive will make sure everyone gets to their holiday destination and home again safely” Acting Superintendent Anderson said.
During last year’s Queen’s Birthday long weekend double demerit period, ACT Policing issued 152 Traffic Infringement Notices to drivers and conducted 281 random roadside breath tests.
