It's show time -- for government services?

It’s showtime again!

To me the Canberra Show means alpacas, cows’ rear ends, showbags, pretty cakes, sideshows, strange fruit pictures and endless rows of people selling useful junk. To you it may mean something different.

It certainly means something different to Chief Minister Jon Stanhope, who is touting the show as a place for Canberrans to find out about their government and its services.

“Eight separate agencies will be included in the ACT Government display, giving visitors a good glimpse at the many services we provide,” Mr Stanhope said.

“Information will be on hand about everything from upcoming Government events to water-saving tips, health and educational services and how to avoid scams” [probably useful at the show].

He also said the Celebrate Canberra festival would be promoted, with birthday cake for anyone who visited the stand and an opportunity to win a balloon ride for two.

So take note folks, the show is not all about fun, frivolity and animals. It’s actually a serious place to learn about your government.

My department was calling for people to man our stall, but a month back I couldn’t think that far ahead, but now I know I can’t. I’d only want to go for the showbags anyway.

re: free stuff and the canberra show, last year i volunteered at the show as a way of getting in for free…which worked.
This year they sent me a letter asking if i wanted to volunteer again, i didn’t so i threw the letter in the bin.

Imagine my surprise when a few days later I receive another letter saying thanks for agreeing to volunteer, with a free ticket attached!

Not sure if i’ll go though, working on saturday and tropfest on sun…

They do this all the time, at the Science Festival, Careers Market etc. I scored a free ACT Govt drink bottle and some magnets at one of them, anything for a freebie.

I think this is pretty standard stuff actually… with the exception of the birthday cake, that’s new.

Kind of seems similar to the proliferation of Banks, Insurance Companies and so forth at Market Day this year… did anyone else find that a bit out of place?

How could you leave out the headline?

“IN BETWEEN SHOWBAGS AND RIDES, FIND OUT MORE ABOUT ACT GOVERNMENT SERVICES”

What planet is the Chief Minister and his staff orbitting?
