Chief Minister Stanhope has the intriguing news that wrinkle rocker Jimmy Barnes is going to headline the Celebrate In The Park show from Stage 88 on 14 March for Canberra’s birthday.

Fear not, the now obligatory Australian Idol washout is also on the bill.

Australian rock legend Jimmy Barnes will headline Canberra’s 98th birthday party next month at a free concert in Commonwealth Park, Chief Minister Jon Stanhope said today.

Celebrate in the Park will be held at Stage 88 on March 14 and is part of a nine day festival to mark Canberra’s birthday.

This year’s concert line-up includes dance sensation The Potbelleez, chart toppers Scarlett Belle and former Australian Idol favourite and Country Music Festival winner, Luke Dickens.

It’s going to be a rather crowded long weekend of entertainment being put on for the most part by the ACT Government and it’s instrumentalities:

The Canberra Day long weekend also marks the start of new event Enlighten, featuring performances by jazz legend George Benson and Australian favourite, INXS. Other highlights of the weekend are the popular Symphony in the Park conducted by Guy Noble and The Black Opal Race Meeting at Thoroughbred Park.

Jimmy Barnes eh? That would have been SOOOOO cool in 1987!

Well no, it’s not free.

We’re all paying for it like it or not.

If it was ticketed then it would be free to those who dislike it.

Gees guys…it’s free….don’t like it simple DON’T GO !!

Antares Autotune. That’s it’s job.

If that’s how she did it then I really wish she’d lent it to Little Red who played earlier! Boy, those guys needed it bad!

In any case it doesn’t detract from the main argument, which was that I thought her segment was pretty good and sounded a lot better than J. Barnes.

So what we have is an old fart, two tarts and and idol washout. Great that the Potbelleez are on the bill, but it’d be nice to have an A-list headliner.

Meh, what can you expect for free?

I’d still take Barnesy over Jessica Mauboy

Really? Jessica Mauboy was live at the Australia Day concert, and Jimmy Barnes via link to SA where he was performing. Barnes can still perform, but his voice! Lord, his vocal cords must be like bits of old barbed wire now! It was painful in some places to hear him sing – surely that’s gotta hurt!

In contrast, although Mauboy’s style of music isn’t my cup of tea, I though her stagecraft and voice were extraordinary – nailed every note, bang on, and danced the whole time as well. If it was lipsynched it was very well done, but it seemed live at the time. Wouldn’t necessarily buy one of her CDs, but didn’t mind the concert at all.

Kerry,

Maybe check Barnesy’s supports…Potbelleez & Scarlett Belle….doubtful members of these acts were even born in the 80s….and both are recent chart toppers…

I agree JB.
Concert organisers need to move on from the 70s and 80s.

Jimmy, George Benson and INXS are getting their pensions funded by the ACT Government.

I’d still take Barnesy over Jessica Mauboy
