Hi, first post, long time lurker, usual story.

Just wondering if anyone knows what has happened to a restaurant I have been going to since childhood, one of Canberra’s cheap and cheerful cheapies – Lees Inn in Manuka.

Went for takeaway recently and its been gutted.

Is the whole building going? Or a restaurant refit?

Thanks

Try out the new one on the corner, Charlie Black.. Its a really nice place, been renovated nicely. Not a huge menu but the food has decent serving sizes and great quality.

To lose Canberra’s most unpretentious restaurant is an all-too-tragic sign of the times. Pretty soon all that’ll be left is a generic bunch of tapas-serving $hitholes with obligitory food-condiment names (e.g Rocksalt, Red Salt, Saffron, Sage, Milk, Milk & Honey, Ginger & Spice, Black Pepper, Blue Olive, Bread & Butter to name a few). I know it’s cool to be seen dining at places like this on a Friday night, but all I want is a menu without a single mention of “jus”. Is that too much to ask?

Yeah I know. Much better to eat a glow in the dark red sauce packed full of your favourite MSG.

I guess there’s only a limited number of people in Canberra who’s life experience is so constrained that they honestly believe that somewhere like Lee’s is worth frequenting. Once that supply of people runs down, closure would not be far away.

It was cheap once upon a time – but the prices suddenly went up 50 per cent a few years ago. I ate there twice, and both times was served rotten vegetables. They bought rotten veges from the markets and rotten meat from a dodgy middleman so yes, could have been cat in there!

On a positive note, there are far less missing cats in the Manuka area these days.

I know that it was under new management, probably about a year ago.

NOOOO I havent been in a long time but I loved that place!

That’s sad. I really liked Lee’s. Good food, great prices. Open late – perfect for shift workers. So sad.
