The Canberra Liberals will spend $550,000 to upgrade Greenway Oval if they win Government next month, Shadow Minister for Sport and Recreation, Steve Doszpot said today.

Mr Doszpot said the oval had been in need of significant upgrades for some time so that it could continue to cater for families in the Tuggeranong Valley.

“Today’s commitment will help many sporting clubs including the Tuggeranong Football Club, Tuggeranong Valley Bushrangers, and ACT Gridiron,” Mr Doszpot said today.

“We will work with these sporting clubs and all users of Greenway Oval to examine the growing needs of the facility and the best possible upgrades that can be delivered with this funding commitment.”

Fellow Liberal MLA Nicole Lawder said members of the community had raised concerns about the grandstand being inadequate and about change and shower rooms, coaches’ and media boxes, storage, cleaning and canteen facilities, and access for people with a disability.

“These concerns have gone unaddressed for too long and I’m proud to be part of a team that is listening to the community and wants to deliver adequate local services,” Ms Lawder said.

John Glenn, Chairman of a Joint Committee representing the interests of the three major users of the Greenway Oval said that the users welcomed the initiative.

Yes this oval gets used A LOT actually, and yes, a LOT of people don’t even know it’s there. I was there every week around 10 years ago when I was last an active soccer ref. Yes the facilities there are in DIRE NEED of an upgrade, not surprised it will cost this much, it should have been done 10-15 years ago, that’s why it will cost so much now, long term neglect of even basic maintenance over time. This money is very much needed though, am hoping Labor will now match this commitment.

“it should have been done 10-15 years ago”. Correct, and ACT Labor has been in power here for 13+ years and they havent fixed it. Not even “basic maintenance over time” as u correctly observe.

So, now that the Lib’s say they will throw some $ at it (assuming of course that they don’t find a “Barr black hole” or 10 in the budget, so all commitments election will be off) in this election year, you hope that ACT Labor/Greens will make election publicity spin out of reversing that neglect ?

Might have been better for ACT Labor/Greens to list it in a list of “jobs done” already.

Yes, now that Libs have announced this, it should wake Labor up to the fact that they should have announced this 1-4 elections ago and not given the Libs the opportunity to 1-up them like this.

Sadly this is the 2nd (3rd?) time now this campaign that Labor has let Libs 1-up them like this and has been / will be forced to match their commitment. This is why opposition is just as important if not more so than government, we need effective opposition all the time though, not just at election time. If the Liberals spent less time focusing on mediscare lies about the tram costings, and more on community issues like this, they might have a better chance at this election.

There’s an oval in Greenway?
I have lived in Canberra for 35 years and I didn’t know that.

Its down past the Dept. Human Services building. At the end of Soward Way. Pretty good oval too. Quite a number of events held there I think.

Sounds like it would be a good site for the light rail terminus when it is extended to Tuggeranong town centre.

It will probably be announced by Barr next week.

It must be in a bad way to need over half a million spent on it.
Then again, Andrew Barr used to fork out half a million to the NGA every time they put on a “blockbuster” so it probably won’t go far.
Half of it will probably be spent on those stainless steel bottle refillers/bubblers, bike paths and LGBTIXYZ toilets.

Half a million to put a cycle lane in tuggeranong main street or the same for oval upgrades for 1000s of people.
