I think it’s time mobile companies started being more proactive with stolen and lost phones and offered a free tracking service for stolen mobile phones.
My iPhone has a tracking function that can send the exact GPS location via the internet, but only because I’m a MobileMe subscriber.
Since most smart phones now have GPS, there should be nothing stopping them offering such a service for free, given the systems are already in place. Put a pin on your phone for privacy and if you ever need to find it, just enter it remotely and if it’s in range you can find it.
These things are cheaps electronics, built down to a price. Why bother?
