A 20-year-old Lyneham man will face the ACT Magistrates Court this morning after failing to stop his vehicle when directed by police last night (Thursday June 19).

About 10.50pm, police signalled to the driver of a white Holden Commodore to stop in the Cotter region. The vehicle failed to stop and police followed the vehicle briefly before terminating the pursuit on Tidbinbilla Road.

A short time later the same vehicle was identified by police on Coppins Crossing Road. Police again followed the vehicle at a safe distance from William Hovell Drive to the Monaro Highway, reaching speeds of 166km/h in a 90km/h zone.

The white Holden Commodore came to a stop on the Monaro Highway when it ran out of petrol.

The 20-year-old driver was arrested and conveyed to the ACT Watch House. A 12-year-old boy, who had been a passenger in the vehicle, was taken into protective custody and later released.

The driver, who had been wanted on a First Instance Warrant, was charged with offences relating to driving unlicensed, driving an unregistered/suspended and uninsured vehicle, failing to stop when directed by police and reckless driving.

The man will face the ACT Magistrates Court this morning.
