ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to a serious collision on the Monaro Highway, Pialligo, this afternoon (Wednesday, December 8) in which a 23-year-old male driver suffered critical injuries.
ACTPOL’s Collision Investigation and Reconstruction Team is investigating the incident which occurred around 2.08pm.
Police believe the injured man had been driving a white Holden Commodore which a few minutes beforehand had been involved in a minor collision with a black Ford Falcon on Newcastle Street, Fyshwick.
The Commodore driver had fled the scene of the minor collision and driven north on the Monaro Highway toward Civic. On a sweeping left-hand bend of the road which links the Monaro Highway with Morshead Drive, the driver lost control, veered across the median strip and struck an oncoming Mitsubishi light truck, before going over an embankment. No other persons were injured.
Police believe that excessive speed and damp road conditions are potential contributing factors to the collision and are seeking any further witnesses to either the Newcastle Street incident, or the one a few minutes later on Monaro Highway.
Witnesses are urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers website on www.act.crimestoppers.com.au.
