The National Capital Authority is advising they’ve closed a large swathe of the lake to swimming despite all the new water flowing in from Googong:

The following areas of Lake Burley Griffin are currently closed to primary contact recreation (swimming, diving and windsurfing):

— West Basin (extreme algae alert)
— Black Mountain Beach (extreme algae alert)
— Yarramundi Reach / Weston Park West (extreme algae alert)
— East Basin (high algae alert)
— Lotus Bay (high bacteria and algae alert)
— Yarralumla Beach (high algae alert)
— Tarcoola Reach / Weston Park East (high algae alert)

The closures are in force until 4 March.

The only way they will be able to clean up the lake is to divert the 4GL of not well enough treated sewerage from Queanbeyan.

On a KaosPatrol at lunchtime along the lakes edge our wasted water park, LBG, I noticed it has a lovely brown tinge then turning green along the edge and in the wake of power boats. Saw a patrol boat motor under C’wealth Ave bridge and do donuts around the water jet with newby armed forces/afp bods on board, looking at the wake after the dingy passed it came up green. Also very radiator fluid green around the paddleboat hire dock.
