Over the hill, just a few minutes away from Canberra City, set on the north eastern slopes of Mt. Majura, sits a vineyard and winery of quality with a very local and distinct character… Mount Majura Vineyard.

All the wines are crafted from grapes grown on the property. Every vintage is unique reflecting the season and the setting in which the vines have been grown. Every wine shows and demonstrates the clarity and intensity of flavour that are the hallmarks of single vineyard wines.

Currently on tasting are 5 whites and 6 reds. Here are a few to consider.

2013 Chardonnay
A note to begin with… please do not drink this variety too cold. Give it a chance to show it’s charms, let the fruit out and just allow the oak to be the frame.

A smokey, savoury smell bursts from the glass, then the fruit takes over, fresh, slightly austere, clean and lingering… smile. Good fruit, not too ripe, 15% matured in new oak, malolactic process only partially completed (so not viscous and buttery wine) good acid balance and delicious light mouth feel. Making this an ideal wine for either sipping and socialising or to compliment food.

2012 TSG – a Tempranillo, Shiraz and Graciano blend
A mid-weight wine with a lot going on. Bright dark fruits with earthy undertones and solid dependable tannins that give the wine structure and allow the flavour story to unfold.

The varietals are fermented separately and blended for maturing giving the wine an even flavour and intensity throughout. This wine will surprise and delight.

2010 Dinny’s Block – a co-fermented blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon
A wine for the Bordeaux lovers, similar idea, individual time and place. Aromatic, earthy and fruity with a hint of of spearmint. The structure allows time for the mouth and the mind to deconstruct and enjoy the journey. The Cabernet Sauvignon gives that first intensity of flavour, the Merlot keeps the flavour moving, all the while the Cabernet Franc is backing up and ensuring there is a constant if less intense flavour to enjoy, then another delight the sharpish tannins of Cabernet Sauvignon grip. All in all a very pleasing and satisfying experience… a taste and intellectual tour of the wine makers skills.

Mount Majura Vineyard Cellar Door is open every day except Tuesdays and Wednesdays, from 10am to 5pm. For further information visit www.mountmajura.com.au
