Moving to Googong & researching high school options

Hi Rioters

We will be moving to Googong next year and I’m in search of a new school for my son. He will be going in to year 8.

I’m considering St Edmund’s but I’d happily consider a public school as my son is currently attending Harrison and we are very happy with it.

I’m not sure how the whole priority placement area thing works with students from over the border so would be interested to hear of people’s experiences.

Can anyone tell me about their current experiences with St Edmund’s and / or recommend any other schools that service Googong / Jerra? I’d prefer a school that has good academic results over strong sporting results.

You have a few options. Something like 5,000 children travel out of the Queanbeyan region everyday to attend schools in the ACT. The main high schools of choice are; Campbell HS, St Edmunds College and the Grammar Schools.

Campbell HS particularly has a strong NSW enrolment. Of course, locally you have Karabar HS which has a gained a sound reputation over the last four/five years. Next year, the new Anglican school will open in Googong and they have already appointed the founding principal. At this stage, I believe that Googong Anglican is only opening for primary years (but check with the Independant School Association on this).

The best avenue in choosing any school, is to make an appointment with the school and talk to the principal. The most important factor is selecting a school that matches your child’s needs, rather than selecting a school soley based on published academic ‘results’.
