Police have launched a search for a prisoner who absconded while on a work release program in the state’s south this afternoon.

Cooma Correctional Centre inmate Adam Bowhay, 34, was with two other inmates at Snowy Oval in Cooma as part of a local work release program early this afternoon (Tuesday 26 February).

He fled the area around 1.15pm and has not been seen since.

Bowhay is serving a sentence of 23 years for a murder in 1997.

Police from Monaro Local Area Command have mounted a major search of the area involving local resources.

The public is being urged not to approach the man but to instead contact Triple Zero immediately.

Bowhay is described as being of Caucasian appearance, approximately 184cm tall, medium/large build, bald head and clean shaven. He has tattoos around his neck, upper arm and legs.

He was last seen wearing work gear which consists of a fluorescent yellow shirt and blue and green ‘King Gee’ brand long pants.

The most disturbing thing about this is he was 18 when he committed the murder!

He’s been caught.11.30 this monring near Bredbo.

Given the weather he was probably greatful.

“A member of the public notified police after spotting Adam Bowhay, 34 on Billilingra Road, south of Bredbo, about 11.30am today.

Police from Monaro Local Area Command rushed to the scene and arrested Bowhay without incident”. [Daily Tele]

There were no guards only a council dude and the oval is adjacent to the local high school. Derp.

and the school was never informed of the escape till the end of the day at 3pm

Fixed.

I think he was seen trying to break into our gaol whats-it thing.

Doubt it, heard there’s no opportunities for higher education, crap entertainment and as for the food…….

What about his human rights?

Errmmm…no guards? For a convicted murderer with seven years to go? Seriously? I wouldn’t be surprised at all, but do you have sources for this?

He was doing a pre-release program. This means that a few weeks later he would have been out and in the community anyway.

This has been happening in Cooma for over 15 years IIIC.

Before that it was a sex-offenders only prison. The diddlers were great, very quiet and unlikely to bash and rob.

well… it is a minimum security prison.

The prison guards on the oval must be pissed that he didn’t return with their smokes and change from the fifty dollar note they gave him.

Yeah it’s pretty dumb. Why would someone who’s done two thirds of a sentence do a runner? Once he’s caught he’ll be let off early for showing initiative.

Look what we have here:

“[Adam Bowhay] then took part in a lengthy recorded interview at Wangaratta (NSW) with Detective Campbell. This time he immediately confessed that he had been the one who killed Steven, staying he had stabbed him, strangled him, and jumped all over him. He said his reason for doing it was because Steven “pissed him off and kept on touching Rachel”:
“Q: And what happened then?
A: I looked, told him, I said ‘What would you do if I punched you in the mouth‘? He said ‘Id probably ask ‘Why‘? So I smacked him a good one in the head. I told him I was going to keep going, and he pulled out a knife. So I pulled out a knife as well. I know how to use a knife, he didn’t.
Q: What happened then?
A: Well, I stabbed him, strangled him to make sure he was dead, jumped all over him, dragged him down. I took his wallet first and his hotel keys, dragged him down to the side of the river, just left him there. Went back to his hotel, took what I wanted out of his room and left Casino.
Q: Were you alone at the time you say you killed Mr Jarvis?
A: Yeah. Me girlfriend was there but she wasn’t close enough to know really what was going on.”

Which I found at: http://murdersheblogs.blogspot.com.au/2010/04/i-didnt-know-if-id-killed-him-good.html

Great work to whoever’s responsible. Useless fecking bureaucrats.

I drove through Wangaratta last week. I thought it was in Victoria, not NSW.
I think maybe the detective meant Wallangarra?

Nah, probably Wooloomooloo. Or Wollongong

Waramanga?

I’m all for making them earn their keep but fluoro shirt and green king gee’s? That won’t blend in around Cooma. What’s wrong with the standard striped pyjamas?

Striped clothing went out a long long time ago, NSW prisoners wear green, just like that in his photo above.

Agree with those espousing the use of technology to monitor these blokes. Surely Corrections can get a good price on a job lot.

And how is that his prison uniform whilst on work release is that of any other tradesman? What about fluoro orange jumpsuits or something equally distinctive, so that he can’t just walk off and blend into the crowd?

What about GPS trackers around the ankles in case they do a runner?

What about a bit of common sense and some basic precautions to prevent escape. Am I missing something here?

Human rights something something lets make them poor prisoners feel like the rest of society something something those poor souls something something

THIS IS AN (UNOFFICIAL) PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT

Lock your doors and windows people.
If this guys is out and about you don’t want him in your home.
He is rather large and at large. (pun unintended)

Perhaps so used to prison he wants to be caught so he can stay longer….

Would have been eligible for parole in one month, apparently

Based on that, first thought that came to mind was that he knows this too and perhaps he doesn’t want to leave/be released. Hence, he stages a run for it, then gives up a short time later knowing that he’ll cop added time and he’s back where he wants to be. Anxious about going back into mainstream society?

To be fair, he has been locked up for a long time so he may have been showing signs of a model reformed prisoner.

He has blown all that though now.

I think that sniffing the breeze of ‘freedom’ while on work release will earn him a ticket to
the cosy Goulburn facility.

How Canberran

Interestingly the Court of Criminal appeal accepted that the trial judge made an error in his directions on the elements of the defence of provocation however they dismissed the appeals for conviction and the term of the sentence.Application for special leave to appeal to the High Court was briefly heard by Gaudron,Kirby and Callinan who refused the appeal and the following brief transcript makes for interesting reading

Yeah it’s pretty dumb. Why would someone who’s done two thirds of a sentence do a runner? Once he’s caught he’ll do another decade for escaping.

At least he’s wearing a fluorescent shirt.

Oh FFS, which genius decided it would be a truly excellent idea to let murderers out on work release? They should be locked up themselves. I don’t think I’m one of those “screw the rights of prisoners” people but violent offenders, especially killers, shouldn’t be allowed out and about while they’re in the custody of the state.

Haha twice in a week I have agreed with the mad doktor

Just gonna throw this out there… leg irons, chain and ball, GPS tracker? Did he defeat all these or didn’t they use them?

Looks like he’s copped a distinguished right-hook.

Would have been eligible for parole in one month, apparently, stupid cretin. He could certainly do with having an extra 5 or 10 years on sentence though, so I guess this cloud does have a silver lining. And if I really want to get my hopes up, maybe he’ll be killed while being taken into custody, but that’s probably setting my expectations too high.
