NCA shifting dirt around the lake to make them look busy

For a few months now there appears to be work around the steps of the National Library, with the purpose of beautifying the area. Personally, I have seen nothing wrong with the stairs at the Library.

However, what would be helpful is if you could walk around the whole lake without crossing a road.

At the moment, to get to Kings Ave bridge from the Sculpture garden one must cross a busy road. Why can’t the National Capital Authority spend the money on putting a bridge or a tunnel there rather than beautifying perfectly fine stairs at the Library?

If the NCA need something to do, I’d quite like them to bring back the heritage bus shelter on national circuit (it got slightly damaged by a truck backing into it, so they removed it holus bolus).

I presume we are talking about where Bowen Ave (coming from Kingston way) curves into King’s Avenue. Agreed, this is dodgy territory for cyclists and pedestrians, especially when the road is chockers with people going to/from work.

This intersection is on my daily bicycle commute and I would be happy to see it made a bit more pedestrian/cyclist friendly. Hell, it’s bad for cars too, the man could fix that while he’s at it.

I recently half read an email where a cycling lobby group (NOT Pedal Power) was liaising with some planning body to sort it out. Sorry, I can’t remember anymore details than that, but it is on a planner’s radar, somewhere.

“Gee – they built those buildings badly in the 70’s?”

A lot not much chop about how they are building them now either – viz. Canberra Centre flooding, DEEWR building collapse…

Hey Johnboy
What are the chances of starting a “bridge to bridge, unbroken” campaign on the riot-act?

Well yes, it is not technically going all the way around the lake.

But the bridge to bridge walk is commonly called “around the lake”. Not exactly accurate, but it is the most common usage for the term. And probably the most common walk that hundreds of people do every day.

Whatever it is called…it is still a very hazardous road crossing.

So why call it around the Lake?, to me that means Scrivener Dam via Dairy Flat.

“bridge to bridge” people call it.

Starting at NGA, around Commonwealth Ave bridge and continue back to NGA – via the scary 6 lane road crossing with poor visibility of oncoming traffic.

By around the lake, do people mean around the Lake or around the Central Basin?

Sometimes I go the other way on the lake shore path UNDERNEATH Kings Bridge.
Maybe its hard to find from the other direction?
Hint, just walk near the lake’s edge.

YES – I am amazed noone has died crossing that road too. And hundreds of people do that walk round the lake every day.

NCA could do something really really useful if they could fix that up.

ant – you can go under the road if you want to end up in Kingston. If you want to continue your circuit round the lake you have to play chicken with three lanes of speeding cars on a tight bend.

This has annoyed me for years, and I have written to the NCA about it with no reply.

Why can you not do a bridge-to-bridge walk around the lake without having to cross a major road at what is basically a blind corner?

I am continually amazed that no-one has been killed there.

no, that would be shaken

Can’t you just go under the road?

Gee – they built those buildings badly in the 70’s? The high court roof is crap – dampness with the library. But there is always a lot going on around the lake. It has not been construction free in the last 15 years.

Carparks get blocked, shifted and re-opened at their original place. A lot of the work seems pointless.

But to walk around the lake without crossing the road would be a marvellous thing.

I hope whoever is the head of the NCA (is it Senator Lundy?) is reading this!

BTW – the icecream at that new cafe is crap. The day we had it – it wasn’t even frozen. However it didn’t have any poo in it – which was a good thing!!!

I have a friend that works in the Library. About a month ago she indicated that the work isn’t actually on “beautifying” the stairs, but rather remediating the building where dampness and water leakage has been a problem in the lower ground floor/basement.
