The ABC, via Yahoo, is reporting that the catholic community in the ACT are going to have Mark Coleridge as the Archbishop of Canberra and Goulburn.

Given the number of national media outlets he comes up on in google I imagine we’re going to hear a lot from him real soon now.

exactly and what do we do to those who let the group down. We incarcerate them.. we try to abolish their behaviour.

Not every religion outcasts people because of sexual orientation, incidentally. There are many, many people who’d describe themselves as Christian (or Muslims, Buddhists or other supposedly “anti-gay religions”) who are also practicing gays and lesbians. They believe that the fundamental lesson of their religion is one of acceptance and love – not one of exclusion and intolerance. And who am I to say that they’re wrong, and their religion should belong to the most hateful, spiteful people within that religion?

Condemning a group due to the weakest members of the group is like saying all white people are murderous bastards due to the behaviour of Ivan Milat.

and while i am at it before I head back to my sick bed. You are only as good as your weakest link. I may go out and do heaps for the community help the homeless, give hours and money to charity blah blah but I might also hate fags and decide to murder them. Am I a good person. No!

Science may produce bad shit but it is rarely ever deliberate. Outcasting someone for sexual orientation, race, sex, personal belief system is deliberate.

yep science caused global warming. Agreed. And like most of other things as soon as science finds something wrong it attempts to neutralise the problem.

Why is the problem still around because people of christian and judaic beliefs inability to accept that it matters. Like any good nihist they put no value in life.

i can see that religion has done some positive society based things… but its all catchup footy… they still wont accepts fags, women and interacial’s have only been accepted into society over the last 30/40 odd years. And they still don’t accept them 100%. Where is the morality in that? Where is the sense of community in that?

You have entirely too much faith in “most people”, Battlekath.

I thought most people would be smart enough not to believe in supernatural beings. It sounds so ridiculous, but people get sucked in by it.

AD – religion did embrace science and we ended up with Christian Science.

From Wikipedia – “At the core of Christian Science is the teaching that illness is an illusion caused by faulty beliefs, and that prayer heals by replacing erroneous thoughts with spiritual (true) ideas. Consequently, healing (and health care) is attempted not through physical manipulation of patients’ bodies through drugs, surgery, or otherwise, but rather through prayer and spiritualization of thought.

Must…not…wade…in…

Ahh, crap, who am I kidding. I’m far too mouthy not to.

AD – religion is no more evil than science. Yep; religion has given us a lot of nasty stuff – witch burning, suicide bombers and overpopulation. Just remember science gave us nuclear weapons, global warming and Chernobyl.

On the flipside religion has given us community, St Vincent de Paul & the Sallies, and the basis of our Western system of morality (the good bits; like not killing or stealing or shagging your mate’s girl/boy). Just as science gave us penicillin, vaccines and the internet.

Your constant hacking out on religion ignores the fact that it can be a force for good, and usually is; especially at the community level.

Religion tends to be a problem when it gets mixed up in politics. Now that’s a point I’ll accede; but not “All religion is bad, and all religious people are stupid.”

For the record, I’m an atheist and a sceptic. But just ‘cause I think religion is a bit silly doesn’t mean it should be destroyed.

Pagansim is essentially about balance right? it stems from when people should plant their seeds according to stars etc. To me that is a traditional form of science with a little mysticism thrown in. I don’t have a problem with that. I have a problem with people holding back the world and humans from achieving greatness. I was always agnostic/pagan/nihilistic as a kid and sometimes still swap amongst those… but when those cretins from the church complained about stem cell research I got pretty angry and my anger has escalated over the years to the point that I have put a lot of time and energy into trying to find out about religion and science (which is way over my head but I have a base level undestanding of it)…. and i have come to the personal conclusion that religion as we know it, is essentially based in evil.

If people want to believe something then fine, but believe in something that isn’t damaging to the world and allows for progressiveness.

The problem isn’t religion, it’s ideologies. Now, religion is a form of ideology, but, if Soviet Russia proved anything, it proved that you can do a whole lot of damage to people without having to adopt any form of religion whatsoever.

i used to think religion should eb done away with, but most peopel are too feeble minded to think for themselves.

they just ape and adopt other opinions and beliefs and then think they are their own thoughts and ideas. nil realisation or awareness.

so if we took religion away, as pol pot, stalin and hitler tried, we end up with peopel believing in state sanctioned isms and personality cults.

perhaps a little get together on a sunday morning is preferable to a gulag.

while women still read their star signs in new idea, humanity wont evolve past believing in fairy tales like religion.

once religion is systematically removed those of us that appreciate life can get on with it.

and what a nice onion it is!

tee hee!

Absent Diane4:38 pm 21 Jun 06

exackery it is the responsibility of the religion to do that.. by protecting them.. they do themselves no credit.

until they learn to do so… and maybe learn to embrace science.. and say “well science has proved that we know less than what we thought our about creator” then it should put back on the shelves and viewed as fascinating but irrelevant part of our history. in my less than humble onion!!

As someone who’s been on the organising committee of a few social groups, morons will show up if you’re publicising yourself. And you won’t be able to get rid of them, no matter how hard you try. Religions, presumably, have the same problem – with the difference that there’s a lot of threads in many religions which, if not understood properly, can be quite dangerous in the wrong hands.

And there aren’t that many religions willing to excommunicate people on the grounds of extreme stupidity.

Absent Diane4:17 pm 21 Jun 06

yes but why do morons flock to religion?

and i am not saying that every religious person is a moron… but most evil does come from someone with religion in their life

Amen to that!

Some muslims are a bunch of freaks. Some Catholics, ditto.

Moronity knows no religion, nationality or race. An idiot is an idiot is an idiot.

That’s great news, unbeliever.

VY, I’d never bag any other religion other than my own. I’m happy to point out the paradox in mine though.

I find it interesting that everyone loves to have a go at the Catholic church, and yet it’s so politically incorrect to call the Muslims a bunch of sideshow freaks…

Well, given that most union players are ex-private schoolboys anyway, presumably they’ve got most of their homoeroticism out of the way nice and early during a friendly game of soggy biscuits.

You’ve obviously never been involved in a major Rugny tour JB, its not just the Leaguies

well there aren’t that many of them 😉

Absent Diane5:32 pm 20 Jun 06

yeah but surely the converts are bringing across their sexual habits!! they seem to bring every other good and bad habit along….

It’s the mungos into the group sex AD.

Anyway a catholic bishop is probably unkeen on homosexuality unless it comes under the sacred auspices of priest and child in their care.

Absent Diane4:48 pm 20 Jun 06

back on topic for just a sec… I am curious as to what this blokes stance on homosexuality iis. Wouldn’t it be ironic if he was against as per most catholics yet still went and watched a sport that could be quite easily considered very homoerotic. AND Given the fact these footy players don’t mind shagging together (not each other) is it suspect that maybe they have some latent donut punching tendencies??

Of course Pope ‘Adolf 1’ is evil and full of dirty tricks – he is a German after all!

Absent Diane4:10 pm 20 Jun 06

maybe they could come up with a new sport where potential cardinals and popes have to fight to the death to be awarded the position. And then you could have bets. I reckon that ratzinger fella would kick arse he looks evil and would be full of dirty tricks..

i personally, would hate to be bugged about religion while watching sport…

though i would also hate to be watching sport.

hehehehe

Absent Diane3:55 pm 20 Jun 06

hehehe

I wonder if Jon Stanhope and Absent Diane will be attending the new Bishop’s “swearing in” ceremony?????

He’s already hit the local airwaves – 666 this morning. This guy kinda rocks – calls his new pastoral appointment a ‘gig’ and promises to get heavily into the local rugby scene….I dunno, once upon a time they’d go to Africa & S. America to proselytize, now it’s Canberra Stadium & Viking Park.
-Sounds like he won’t be, to borrow from Clive James, “the anodyne divine who’ll put unction in your function!”

What I love about the catholics is that they’ll ally themselves with groups, for which they have deep dogmatic objections to, in order to get their viewpoint across, e.g Francis Carol’s support for Howards defence of the white nuclear family (ahem), and Pell’s decrying of the new IR laws..all in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy catholic church.
