The new asbestos regulations, along with changes to several other related ACT laws will take effect from 1 January 2015.

WorkSafe ACT’s website now contains updated information on the changes, including a link to the new regulations.

The new regulations also include some important new terminology and changes to definitions.

We no longer talk about ‘bonded asbestos’, for example. Asbestos is either friable – or non-friable.

A new term, Asbestos Contaminated Dust or Debris (ACD) is also used, as well as the term – Naturally Occurring Asbestos (NOA).

WorkSafe ACT has also published a new Guidance Note on what is meant by Minor Maintenance Work and Other Minor Work. This information is particularly relevant as this is the only asbestos removal work that can be done in the ACT after 1 January with the removal of the 10 square metre rule.

Finally, a free seminar has been scheduled for 19 January to provide employers, workers and others with an overview of the new legislation.
