New Karaoke Bar in Belconnen

By 19 July 2010 16

New Karaoke place has opened in the same building as the Prince Palace Restaurant on Emu Bank called “KBar.”

Given the rarity of karaoke bars in Canberra (only one I know that is still running is Sun Box in Dickson), has anyone tried this place yet?

I’m planning to go but I don’t have their details. I will let you guys know how it is.

What was I thinking? That was so long ago now…for sure their arthritis would be playing up by now.

Actually, I’ve been. I took a wander on Saturday night out of boredom and stopped in. It was pretty quiet (just its second weekend open) and the woman running it was very happy to give me a substantial tour and demonstration.
The karaoke bar is 12 rooms. Some are much larger than others. You rent the rooms on a per hour basis. On the busier nights it’s $50 an hour. On the quieter nights you rent on a $10 per person per hour basis I think.
The food is delivered to your rooms – there’s no central place to gather or eat. The bar is pretty minimalist and reminds me a lot of how the bar at Bogart’s looked.
The song system seems pretty cool and you can choose the decibels of your music. If you wanted to just listen to the music with the words attached you can, or you can completely mute the words. There’s a bit of confusion with how many songs they have. She first told me 5000 and then wrote 50,000 on a piece of paper, noting that 40,000 of those were Chinese, and 5000 are English. There are also Japanese and Korean songs.
The catch is… everything is currently in just Chinese – there’s no English menu, and the system is entirely in Chinese. If you can understand the symbols it’s pretty easy to work but otherwise…
She said that she’s hoping in 1-2 weeks it will be able to cater to English speakers.
Ultimately, it seems like a cool idea and I’ll be watching closely to see how it takes off. There were about 3 rooms being used when I was there. The place seemed quite clean, the couches and tables in the rooms seemed pretty decent quality, though one thing I saw definitely looked second hand/was chipped. I can’t report on the menu, obviously, because it was in Chinese.

They sold up and moved to Adelaide I think years ago. Paulie was an absolute legend.

Don’t we have laws against this kind of thing?

Oh come on! A bloody Karaoke bar?? Karaoke was done to death a million years ago!
It just goes to show how behind the times Canberra, and possibly Australia, is compared with the rest of civilisation.

Given the rarity of karaoke bars in Canberra

Canberrans can sing even if their granma’s life depended on it, so that is probably why there ain’t more Karaoke Bars.

Or, am I only speaking for myself?? :)

Only if you ‘sing’ anything by Kylie, The Spice Girls, or U2 (without St Bono’s permission).

You’ve never been to Asia then ? I’ve only been to Vietnam and Japan and its like there is one on every second corner. In Japan its awesome because in most places you get all you can drink, its a very social thing to do with friends.

If someone drives me home I’d probably go and give it a try if they have Pearl Jam in Engilsh subtitles.

This place should do really well, with all the international students living nearby at UC.

I have been to the Dickson one and to others in Sydney. You don’t need to be drunk to do Karaoke, it’s a fun social thing to do, especially with the Asian crowd.

It would be great for a hens/stag night.

KTV Bar (Belconnen) – 02 6162 4168 or 0403 491 264
