Nithya Sambasivam the young lawyer of the year

By 6 December, 2012 6

The Law Society is letting it be known that Ms Nithya Sambasivam has been gonged as the young learned friend of the year.

The ACT Law Society commends Ms Nithya Sambasivam for her dedication and commitment to the legal profession, her passion in promoting the interests of both young lawyers and women lawyers in the ACT, and her tireless support of community work outside the law.

Ms Sambasivam is the winner of the ACT Law Society’s Young Lawyer of the Year Award for 2012. The Award recognises the professional achievements and community involvement of outstanding young lawyers in the Canberra region.

Nithya was presented with the Award by the chair of the judging panel, the Hon Justice John Burns of the ACT Supreme Court, at the Law Society’s December Members’ Lunch today.

Nithya, who is employed at Goodman Law, was admitted as a solicitor in October 2008 after achieving her combined Bachelor of Commerce and Laws degrees at the Australian National University in 2007.

Nithya’s many professional achievements include serving as an active member of the ACT Law Society’s Dispute Resolution Committee. When she joined the committee in 2010 she was the only young lawyer member. On behalf of the committee she convened a seminar aimed at educating young solicitors like herself about ADR processes in the ACT.

She also has a major role with the Women Lawyers Association of the ACT (WLA ACT). Nithya joined the organisation in 2011 and became its President in mid-2012. She has led several initiatives for the WLA ACT, such as creating a Facebook page to engage young lawyers and law students; reintroducing breakfast seminars to connect young lawyers with senior practitioners; and conducting the first WLA ACT Junior Lawyers Pay and Conditions Survey.

So she gets a gong for, among other things, being a young female lawyer who is passionate about promoting the interests of young female lawyers.

I don’t blame her for this, but it seems strange to actually receive an award for it. Must be a lawyer thing.

Ease up mate, Jesus. Its not about grandstanding, its about recognising people who go beyond the normal standards in consideration of others, the community, all ya’ll, and isn’t it a nice feeling when someone does something nice for you. Humans respond to incentives man, so to have the best chance at getting people to go above and beyond the call of duty for the benefit of others, often the less fortunate, disadvantaged and vulnerable people, is by offering something like this here award. Its a small thanks from her peers really. Don’t be a grinchy mc grinch grinch. Shit what about the awards journos from media like Canberra Times or the fucking abhorrent Herald sun hand out to themselves every year. And they make shit up for a kick. You should ring this young woman and congratulate her and tell her you had no malice intended here. I ll pay your next legals if you do that. Be good ya.

Ok, maybe that was a bit harsh, and I’ll withdraw what I said.

In my defence, I spent almost seven years married to a mentally ill, violent substance abuser who beat me. At the end of the day, her lawyer whipped my lawyers arse, and my ex, who is extremely charming most of the time, walked off with most of my worldly goods, leaving me on the bones of my arse and living in a rented room in a share house at the age of 40. It’s taken me a decade to ( almost) recover from that crap

So, Lawyers? Lets just say they ain’t my favourite people.
