My old man was in Fyshwick today picking up some new doors for the house when a skinny caucasion male approached, asked him if he was interested in buying some stereo equipment he “came accross and needs to sell”.. My old man was walking to the van and guess who pulls up behind him less than 2 seconds later? The po’po!

I saw some articles about this shifty bugger around town.. So lets just say he’s been busted!

Good work officers! 😀

Legit business? Whos to say they don’t goto the joint their about to rip off, buy 1 set of the stereo, take it back, keep the receipt, rip off the place and then go around saying “yeh look mate, i got a receipt, its sooo legit”

Bah, sell the f**kers on ebay or classifieds, don’t go around trying to sell them on the street.. You’d have to be a dumb ass to think you wont get caught.

Do you know if it was a Volkswagen van with Victorian rego ??

No idea, my old man cant remember details like that 🙂

You people do realise these guys are actually conducting a legit business. Sure they make you think you are getting a good deal on some stereo equipment by making it sound dodgy although they own the stock and keep all the relevant invoice records etc… If you get sucked in and buy the stuff thats for you to decide as they don’t offer warranties. Mind you stuff bought from big retailers breaks about 3 days after the warranty expires anyway.

The po po won’t do anything about them. ACCC might have some concerns about their business practises although they have bigger fish to fry.

buyer beware.

Who says that he was intending to buy stolen property? Those white van guys who go around trying to sell speakers try to make it sound like they’re stolen, but they’re not at all. They want people to think that they’re stolen because that would imply that they’re also cheap. In fact, I even believe that they’re running a legal business (although I might be wrong on that one).

Bit of a difference. He actually bought the fireworks, right? I don’t think it’s too illegal to stand near a van, look at a stereo, say “no thanks”, then go report the details to police.

I was actually referring to the comment about outing a drug dealer.

But,
if you are holding the unit when the police rock up, regardless of whether you intend to buy it, it would look pretty bad.

Good work on the Cops finally cathching these people. Hopefully they have enough evidence to prosecute these low lifes.

Surely you guys don’t believe these were the only scammers doing it do you?

So conspiracy to commit a felony is no longer a crime

For the old man to be done, a transaction would actually have to take place and he would actually need to walk away with the stolen equipment.

And then argue in court that, despite evidence suggesting you were there to purchase illegal or stolen goods, you intended to not.

Bit of a difference. He actually bought the fireworks, right? I don’t think it’s too illegal to stand near a van, look at a stereo, say “no thanks”, then go report the details to police.

So if I was attempting to pretend to purchase drugs in order to out a dealer – and I had no advocation from any law enforcement agencies – is my word that I was doing it to out a dealer going to stand up in court?

Of course not.

reminds me of the guy who wanted to prove that you could buy illegal fireworks in canberra. He did so, and was promptly arrested.

well done.

Yeh but you just claim that you were aware the police were after the people involved, thought you could go to the van to have a look – get a description and location of the van, note any distinguishing features, note the number plate and and report it immediatly to the police.

They wouldn’t even think of prosecuting you, as police somewhat rely on information from the public. They wouldn’t want to prosecute people with information otherwise no one would ever come upfront.

Sounds like a sting – hope your old man does not get done for “attempt to procure stolen property “(Pretty good legal jargon eh ?)

So whose van exactly was your old man walking to?
