ACT Policing has arrested a 36-year old Gungahlin man after he fled from police yesterday afternoon (Friday, June 28).

A Traffic Operations officer will allege that around 3pm, while on routine patrol on the Monaro Highway, Fyshwick, he witnessed a white Mitsubishi van driving erratically through traffic.

Police conducted a stop, however after initially speaking to police, the driver sped off.

After driving off, the vehicle crossed the centre median strips and came to a stop for a second time on Monaro Highway near Newcastle Street Fyshwick..

As the officer approached the vehicle the driver exited the car and began behaving aggressively.

After a short struggle police arrested the driver and conveyed him to the ACT Watch House.

The man will face the ACT Magistrates Court later today charged with several driving offences and possession of an illicit substance.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers website on www.act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.
