Engineering nerds will rejoice at the following which has crossed my desk:

The gates to the Cotter Dam worksite are opening to the public this Sunday 28 November, so join us for a special ‘behind the scenes’ opportunity to see work happening on the biggest construction project in the ACT.

Since work began on the new dam last year, the Cotter has been transformed into a spectacular worksite and we’ve now completed around 30% of the project.

Come along and you’ll come face-to-face with a large rock crushing plant, a batch plant with the capacity to process 400,000m3 of rock, a 215,000m3 quarry, 50 tonne trucks and all the machinery being used to build the new dam. Meet our team of engineers and construction workers, witness the amazing view of construction works and see the historic Cotter Dam before the new wall is built.

What: Cotter Dam construction site open day
When: Sunday 28 November 2010, 8.30am – 2.30pm
Where: Bus tours will depart from Cotter Bend every 10 minutes and will take approximately 40 minutes. Limited seats available and crowds are expected so please be prepared to wait.

Parking: Follow the signs along Cotter Road and park at Cotter Bend
Food/drink: BYO for a picnic or there will be a free sausage sizzle with cold drinks available for purchase.

Further information: call (02) 6248 3563

Please note: This is an operating worksite so enclosed walking shoes are essential. Inappropriate footwear will result in restriction from disembarking the bus at designated stops during the tour.

Poor weather conditions may result in cancellation. Please check ACTEW’s website in the event of rain. While you’re at the Cotter you can also walk the new Cotter Dam Discovery Trail to the viewing platform to see the construction works from a different angle. The Trail has wheelchair assisted access and is pram-friendly. A Cotter Dam tour bus with disabled access will be running tours throughout the day
